If they ever remake this

If they ever remake this, I would hope they make it in the more philosophical way that Bill Murray wanted. I think it would be interesting to see what that vision would look like, and to have both so as to be able to compare.

They should remake the exact same film again.

They did...

I think a lot of the charm is the time period. Explaining what is actually happening or specifically why would be too much like Bruce Almighty. The collaboration is definitely what made this film so great, if it was too comical it'd be like Stripes or Animal House if it was too much what Murray wanted it'd be a bore and the supernatural element would be explained as something silly.

They should give it an action-scifi make over, you know less of a comedy. Have Phil fight aliens over and over again....On a beach in france. Is Tom cruise still in shape, or is he too old to play Phil? Maybe replace Andy McDowel with Emily Blunt. That works, no?

Hedy is right - an action-scifi take on this film would bring new life into the story without making it seem like a do-over - you know, like Groundhog Day...

sorry. it took me a while.....

THAT'S HEDLEY!!

Groundhog Independence Day

It they ever remade it, that would be a useless waste of time I'd utterly ignore. :-)

reply

They would turn it into some kind of Woke moral tale.

reply

It already was a moral tale, but the right kind. By example, Phil learned his selfish and obnoxious ways were ultimately self destructive. What I wrote in my review:

"Phil goes from bewildered to distressed to depressed to suicidal and then climbs back up the ladder. Would that we all had the chance for do-overs until we could learn to become the very best versions of ourselves.

That's what this movie is really about. Recognizing what we can do for ourselves and those around us, and eliminating silly faults. Take it to heart."

reply

Not sure if current audiences would need to be hit over the head with it but in 1993 the message of the film was clear within the subtext. After wasting however amount of time by being decadent Phil eventually burns himself out and starts exploring deeper things and improves himself.

reply

I think something subtler than that was aimed at. In fact that was the argument. Let's not do that; it's too obvious.

Please, just no.
No.
It is a classic.
