Opinions on Prince's "Batdance"?

I thought it was an OK song but definitely not one of Prince's best songs, I find it very interesting that it was a smash hit back in the Summer of 1989 but received very little airplay after its chart run.

Overall I give "Batdance" a 5/10

Not a fan of this song.

I do like some of the Purple One's music though.

That song is crap.
But there are some good tracks on the album.

reply

It's not a good song; the sampling is weird.

The music video is so *crazy* that it's kinda worth watching, though.

The chart ranking was due to the massive WB Hollywood propaganda machine pushing this less than mediocre song down our throats in 1989.

Batman shirts and logos were everywhere months before the movie even came out.

Love to know Princes paycheck for this.

It definitely was part of the huge Batman promotion that summer. I was mostly a metal head back then, but I did listen to a lot of pop music as well. I think Batdance was like a lot of the music of that day..catchy, a lot of style, very little substance..fun for the times(July 89) then forget.

Is the song in the movie or the credits? I’ve watched it since childhood and was surprised I don’t recognize the song all.

reply

I think it is partially played in the opening credits.

batdance is ok, but the rest of the album is 10/10. iconic legendary music.

it probably was supposed to transition viewers of the 60's Batman into the then present. It doesn't fit into the Keaton Batman at all--brooding, edgy. Not somebody you'd want to meet in an alley and scuffle with.

This will make me unpopular, but I've never loved any of his work. He may have been a genius, but so was Bach and I can't stand Bach.

reply

I wasn't really a huge fan of Prince either TBH, I liked a few of his songs but was never a big fan of his music.
