Worst part of the movie

Is Dillon. He's so annoying and Carl is such a *beep* actor

reply

but.. but.. he was Apollo Creed! and Action Jackson!

reply

He was cool and a good actor.

reply

He played the "sell-out" role well, I'm pretty sure he was meant to be annoying ;)

reply

I felt his character came through at the end. Loved that part with him and Mac at the end.

reply

He was meant to be annoying and a sort of antagonist, as limited as Carl Weathers is as an actor, he played it really good

reply

I didn't find him annoying at all and he redeemed himself nicely toward the end.

I really struggle to find anything genuinely bad about this movie, but if I have to I'll nominate Dutch sliding over the chasm and into the river. It's staged pretty poorly and edited even worse, not to mention the obvious difference in film stock. But aside from that it's a nearly perfect film experience for me, up there with Jaws as a movie I will never get tired of for the rest of my life.

Make the rescue believable - The idea was to go to a remote jungle hideout, with no extra food, water, or medical supplies, rescue an unknown number of hostages and get those to an evacuation an unknown distance from the guerrilla base on foot? Ummm…huh? The plan was already a bad one, even before they got to the rebel's base, and it just grew worse.

Lose the scenes where Dutch is angry at Dillon - Dutch is a big boy. He knew Dillon is an intelligence operative and there might be more to the mission than he was led to believe. Also, the general doesn't need to lie to Dutch, as you don't have to like the orders that you are given to obey them. Make Dutch and Dillon's interactions more believable.

Give a little backstory on the guerrillas - The fim has them hanging out in a remote jungle camp for no good reason. With a helicopter, no less. Even a few throwaway lines couldn't have hurt, as the film made them just faceless targets.

Make the raid at night or early in the morning - Attacking a fixed position in broad daylight, with inferior numbers, is the first step toward losing. Attacking at night would have provided the group with the element of surprise, while making the appearance of The Predator even more frightening.

Have Dutch die in the end - The creature sets off a nuclear explosion to prevent its capture and Dutch is able to escape by diving underwater? Really? The film is robbed of its dramatic tension because it's clear that almost nothing was at stake. Dutch wasn't going to die, so the ending was “Meh". Dutch's death, along with that of his group, would have been a fitting denouement to the film.

Decent film that works if you don't think about things too hard.

reply

Would all that make it a better, more entertaining movie, or just more realistic though?
As you say at the end it's a decent film if you don't think about things too hard.

reply

That guy clearly did not watch the movie.

reply

Really? I liked that scene. Who hasn't accidentally fallen and slid down a hill before?

reply

The scene itself is fine, but the tech side of it was a bit so so. It doesn't ruin the movie by any means it just sticks out like a sore thumb, just like Ash's head in Alien.

reply

The lighting does change drastically. He goes over the waterfall in daylight. When he is at the bottom it almost looks like a set the way the lighting is set up and the light completely changes.

reply

Think of him much like the mayor in Jaws. He was supposed to be annoying until he gets converted to the cause.

reply

[deleted]

Mayor Vaughn was never converted to the cause. He was converted to saving his job and dodging lawsuits.

reply

Well I'd say almost having your grandkids devoured by a shark a la Kintner boy is enough to make one a converted.

reply

Greatest anchor coat of all time.

Favorite deleted scene in Jaws Is when the mayor first sees Roy Scheider and says “Brody you sonofabitch”.

reply

The anchor coat has its own Facebook group. I don't know of another coat that does.

I'm a big fan of this movie so I don't see many bad parts to it. The one part that does bother me is how Mac's head is blown off when he is shot by the Predator, and it's largely intact in the next shot. A small thing but whenever I see it I'm always left questioning the continuity of it.
