Question about the opening scene

I still don't understand why she jumped. Throughout the movie they reason that she was murdered due to her connection to her father but we clearly saw she wasn't. Unless there was something in the drugs she took that drove her to jump, but I don't know of any drug with such an effect.

reply

This movie was made in the Nancy Reagan "Say no to drugs!" era.

Exaggerating the harmful effects of drugs was common. Public service announcement ads had many examples that tried to scare the viewer out of doing drugs. Jumping out of a widow while high was entirely plausible to the average moviegoer of the 1980's.

reply

I know plenty of people who have died on drugs. One person I knew had been doing a lot of pot and decided to jump out a window and was killed by a bush he fell on "like 5th floor up". I don't think it's exaggerating, some people get really weird on drugs, some people are really weird without them.

Mr. Joshua paid Dixie to poison Amanda’s pills. Amanda realized she had been poisoned, that combined with the fact that she was stoned off her ass lead her to believe that jumping would be a good idea.

reply

How did she realize she was poisoned?

reply

Maybe she felt her heartbeat speed up??? Or maybe she smelled the pills?

reply

Exactly.

Murtaugh tells Michael, Amanda's father, that "even if she hadn't jumped she'd still be dead."

Maybe she knew she was about to die and that's why she jumped.

reply

"I don't know of any drug with such an effect"

PCP has that effect.

reply

Perhaps she though she could fly or survive a jump probably because the poison turned her brains inside out.

reply

i think she jumped because she was depressed, or just really high and accidentally fell, but the police discovered that she would have died anyway because the drugs were also poisoned.

reply

She was doped up and didn't know what she was doing. The poison was supposed to kill her in the apartment. Instead she went out onto the balcony high as a kite and walked off. Ironically this was the catalyst that exposed the whole scheme that her murder was supposed to keep quiet.

reply

""Ironically this was the catalyst that exposed the whole scheme that her murder was supposed to keep quiet.""

Yes, brilliant yet subtle irony from the writer. Love Shane Black.

They poisoned her to get her father to shut up and not blow the whistle about the operation. Now as to why she jumped, she was high and therefore just doing the first thing that came to mind and she knew she had been poisoned and was going to be dead soon anyways. I guess she figured since she’d be dead anyways she’d might as well have a little fun.
