WHY?
shareStereotyping, offensive to many today, not many in 1983.
shareOH...DOES THAT MEAN MOVIES LIKE "DOWNTOWN" NEED TO BE ERASED ENTIRELY?
shareIt is just a matter of time before the scene is scrapped for good.
Purist like you or me might prefer to leave the scene in. $$$ and ratings are more important to TV execs.
It is just very easy to omit the~ 7min scene.
Most radio stations have now omitted a whole verse from the 'Money for Nothing' song by Dire Straits.
I SEE WHAT YOURE SAYING...BOTHERSOME THOUGH.
shareAgreed.
shareThat scene was hilarious why would you edit it out?
shareStereotyping is the big taboo.
Some CEO's of media might be overly cautious. Editing it out under the auspices of "edited for time constraints"
How to you know that was a black stereotype? How do you know that was the directors intention? Please show me direct evidence of that scene being racial (a line of dialogue will work)Also since we later see a family of idiot red necks who apparently like to “keep in in the family” was that a stereotype against white people?
sharePlease show me a similar scene in a movie in the past 5 years.
shareThat is completely irrelevant to what I asked. Quit deflecting
It’s also a non sequitur, the question was is the scene racist , you say it was and I asked you to back up your claim. Whether that kind of humor is utilized today has nothing to do with the topic
It is not irrelevant! The fact that they don't make scenes like this anymore is proof enough that it contains offensive stereotyping.🙂
shareLol that’s not evidence you idiot. That’s just your assumption. And regardless first you’d have to prove that a scene like that does not exist within the past five years, yes you have to prove a negative but you took on that burden of proof so that’s your own fault, and secondly you’d have to prove that the reason is because they don’t want to stereotype and third you’d have to prove that the scene in vacation was stereotyping which you haven’t. You also dodged my question about Cousin Eddie
EDIT: Even if I granted you that people don't make jokes like that today all you would have is the subjective opinion of today's Hollywood filmmakers (who are overwhelmingly liberal). That still would not prove one bit what Harold Ramis's initial intentions were. The only one who has injected race into this is you.
Who cares if it's offensive nowadays! People need learn that if they get that damn offended by an old movie, they can quit watching it. Wear blinders & ear plugs, or live in a bubble so you don't get triggered.
shareDo you think that changing movies from the past is a good idea? I mean first there are the scenes and movies that are honestly problematic for today. Those are understandable. What happens tomorrow? Who gets to decide? I mean Disney is already altering scenes on Disney +.
shareYou can leave them alone sure....but don't expect them to be known to new generations.
Al Jolson
Our Gang
Porky's
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
Robinson Caruso
Just to name a few
The director of this movie said he in a interview was embarrassed by that scene and would remove it.
THE DIRECTOR'S VIEWOF HIS OWN WORK NEARLY 40 YEARS ON...NOT WORTH MUCH...AS ANY OF US WOULD EDIT AND CHANGE A THOUSAND THINGS WE VOUCHED FOR DECADES AGO.
shareCrusoe
shareYou can't unsee what has been seen.
What else do you have on your hitlist? The Jive Talking Brothas on Airplane? Did you find Mrs. Cleaver's Jive talkin' antics a violation of Cultural appropriation?
Oh, and I guess Airplane also promotes violence against Hare Krisnhas as well
Are you telling me that you wouldn't feel uncomfortable sitting with a black family watching that scene?
shareI have sat with black kids my age when that movie came out and we laughed the fuck Out Loud!
shareJesus Christ on a Jet Ski, my project management partner at my last job (when we were in an office still) was black and we constantly quoted "Airplane!" and all sorts of movie gems. We'd go to lunch together, the server would come and check on us and I'd bust out the following, "'S'mofo butter layin' me to da' BONE! Jackin' me up... tight me!"
SERVER: "I'm sorry, I don't understand".
Then HE'D say, "Ma'am, I speak jive... He said that he's in great pain and he wants to know if you can help him."
Then, of course, we'd tell her we're just messing with her.
It's not the goddamn color of one's skin, the question remains is, are they comfortable in it? Both me and fellow I was referring to are in our late 40's. We're just not weak like later generations are. In fact HE was the one who said, "I never want to hear the term 'strong black man' again because these f**kers are WEAK!". I saw his point.
"It's not the goddamn color of one's skin,"
True. It's more about the thickness of it.
People these days seem to have a very thin skin indeed. People should grow a pair and stop labeling everything racist or problematic. Let comedy explore all kinds of grounds and directions, and..
_STOP_GETTING_OFFENDED_ABOUT_EVERY_DAMN_THING_!
In other words,
THERE ARE NO OFFENSIVE SCENES. ONLY OFFENDED REACTIONS.
Otherwise, people in the 1980s would've been JUST AS offended! After all, the scene is either offensive, or it isn't. Why didn't people in the eighties get offended by something OFFENSIVE?
Maybe the scene is NOT offensive, maybe that SCENE is not the problem.
I don’t recall the scene ever mentioning race. It seems you are the one who made the racial connection and you probably have some issues with race yourself . Heck later they show a family of idiot rednecks who just happen to be white, so is that scene racist against white people?
shareHopefully never because that was hilarious.
shareWhat a world. Another offended snowflake idiot that wants to censor pieces of history. I can't even imagine what goes through these people's heads. Offended by everything and on a witch hunt with every piece of media you intake. Absolutely insufferable human beings. Like, a scene from a 1983 Vacation comedy film - seriously??? Fucking trash pile human.
And to answer in reverse the question you asked another person.. I would never be offended by an over the top stereotype making fun of white people.. That's funny comedy.. i.e. Dave Chappelle doing white characters - it's dark comedy! Jesus. Oh or how about the fact that in the sequel, one on going joke is that they are dumb white Americans - and guess what - it's hilarious.
Perhaps soon we really will be living in George Orwell's 1984..
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. History has stopped.”
Soon? Hell, we're already there!
shareI bet you're a fan of burning books, too.
shareThey will never omit it. That scene is there to stay forever. Even on DVD and Blu-ray.
