Not a single female character?

I believe there wasnt a single female character in this movie? that must be a record?

Chess computer voiced by Adrienne Barbeau... but that doesn't really count.

I thought it was one of the "Cooler" aspects of Thing '82, having an all dude cast.

IMDB - Because some Trolls need more than just a bridge

For all intents an purposes, Glengarry Glen Ross also has an all-male cast. There's a brief scene with a waitress or manager at a Chinese restaurant, but her role is even less significant to that film than Adrienne Barbeau's voice in The Thing.

Having all an all male or all female cast of characters has the potential to improve a movie, because it allows a film to focus on the real story rather than having the requisite romance/sex secondary plot gratuitously thrown in. Can you imaging how The Thing would have been ruined if valuable screen time had been wasted on depicting an affair between MacReady and some girl on the base? Or, worse yet, a love triangle between MacReady, the girl, and some other character (Childs?)

Stick to it, Windows
Heh-heh.

Funny how Garry put on his sexy blue night robe before paying Windows a private visit.

While I don't mind when there's an all-male or all-female cast, having characters in love while becoming suspicious of each other's very humanity could be a marvelous source of tension and could be really great.

The original "Thing" had a woman in the cast, with some romantic chemistry between her and the male lead, and it was a better movie.

One of the Norwegians in the photo is a woman - but that probably doesn't count

How about Mac's sex doll? Judging from the behind-the-scenes pics, she looked pretty cute with her pigtails!

reply

Not a single woman in the movie and we get a masterpiece.

Then in 2016 we get Ghostbusters. I will let you draw your own conclusions.

reply

The difference ia, there were male characters in Ghostbusters (2016), therefore your point is invalid.

Good they should make more movies like that

Shawshank Redemption is another movie with a male only main cast. Though it takes place in a prison.

reply

Not really a record by any means. Hundreds of movies come out every year that don't feature females at all.

Anyways, it is a stark contrast to how Hollywood produces and markets movies today. Even if the story line involves mostly men like in war movies they will always cast a familiar actress to play the leading men's significant other back home.

Wonderful testament to Carpenter's ability to assemble a fine set of actors. It wasn't necessary to bog the film down with ANY romantic tension , no distraction. I love it!!!

Maybe back in the 80s women weren't big on hanging with a bunch of smelly dudes in the middle of nowhere for the sake of scientific research.

In the early 1980s, female researchers would have been exceedingly rare even at a BIG research facility in Antarctica. And fictional Station 31 is tiny. In short, it makes complete sense for that movie made and that time to include no female characters.
