Clubber Lang ain't that bad

He's just a loudmouth, some sort of a Muhammad Ali-type of boxer. But he ain't an evil man, unlike that guy in Rocky V (you all know who he is, but I will not reveal his name so as not to spoil the movie). He's a hard worker, he trained hard for his fights despite training in a rundown gym (and without any publicity), and he really prepared for his fight against Rocky Balboa by watching personally Rocky's matches. Clubber Lang would have been a remarkable boxer in real life. I didn't see him as a villain in this film.

Agree with you both whole-heartedly, I mean you don't get a shot at the title saying please and he had been patient enough then all of a sudden he hears Rocky mentioning retirement.

reply

There was talk of him being in Rocky Balboa as a "changed man" a priest who tries to help the community and friends with Rocky maybe even helping Rocky train for his absolute final match against Mason Dixon. Maybe the actor was not available.

He DID hit Mickey even if it was kind of an accident and that might have sped his death. Also, sexually harassing Rocky's wife (the comment about how if she came to his home he would show her a "real man") was going a tad too far.

reply

As mentioned earlier, Lang made a sexually inappropriate comment to Adrian at the statue presentation in front of everyone and humiliated her. He also immediately disrespected Apollo Creed without any validation when they first met. These behaviors go beyond just being a loud mouth. He was a morally corrupt individual.

Clubber Lang 2020, America is tired of Pitying the Fool!

reply

What someone says and what they might do are two different things. Lang was certainly a bully and asshat deluxe, but I don't think we can conclude Lang was morally corrupt from what we saw.

Rocky had been ducking the top contender for three years, and Clubber became more frustrated as time went on. Three years is a long time when you're waiting for your rightful title shot. When Rocky announced his retirement just when Lang's ranking would no longer deny him his title fight, there was nothing left to do for Lang to fight Rocky but goad him into it.

Clubber took Rocky's retirement personally, and goaded Rocky out of it. If you recall, Rocky wanted no part of fighting again until Clubber "propositioned" Adrian, using probably the last card he had in the deck.

Even by today's standards, his comments were not sexually inappropriate, although I concede in ten more years Clubber will be charged with rape for the same comments....

Today, he would be shamed in to apologizing or retiring. If you said within the next five years you would be more accurate.

reply

No way, today Adrian would be the rapist for tempting a POC. Lang would be the victim of Adrian’s white privilege.

reply

Are you drunk? He talks to Adrian like she's a piece of meat and assaults an old man; arguably leading to his death. He's probably the worst person of all of Rocky's opponents.

reply

To a SJW, Clubber is just expressing his culture.

reply

Trolling is of no interest to me. Be gone, basement dweller.

reply

I was mocking the OP and agreeing with you.

reply

Are you high? Clubber was far far from evil, he slightly pushed Mick out of his way like he was pushing everyone in that scene (unaware of Mick's condition) and taunting Adrian was key to getting Rocky to fight him because at that point Rocky was mentioning retirement

reply

Pushing an old man and harassing a woman - someone's wife, no less - is ok as long as it's just goading your opponent...

Shut the fuck up.

reply

youre a fucking idiot

reply

How many sock puppets do you have, Randall?

reply

your mother raised a moron
i hope you do a movie with alec baldwin

reply

He talked to Adrian like that to get Rocky's goat.

reply

He eats only fish and water so he's a swell guy in anybody's book.

Clubber Lang (as with all Balboa's opponents) are merely 'metaphors' for hurdles that Rocky must overcome. Which is why every successive movie, has to 'up the ante' (so to speak) It's usually never the same metaphor twice (or at least in a row)

Apollo signified 'Pride' to Rocky (in their first fight) primarily because no-one gave him a chance
Apollos increased bragidoccio/training, signified 'Doubt' to Rocky (in their rematch)

By the time #III came along, Rocky is now champ (allbeit an unbeknownst paper champ) Complacency has set in and (like Apollo before him) Balboa takes Lang for granted.....and pays the price. This signifies 'fear' (because despite the animosity between Rocky in Apollo in the first two movies....'fear' never played a part in either fight as it did in III)

Now his trainer and title have gone, Rocky's 'ego' is shot to shit. In a telling moment (during his argument with Adrian on the beach) Rocky expresses genuine fear about the rematch with Lang (and previously mentions that he doesn't want to lose what he's got, which is likely his bruised ego talking) Adrian replies that 'Money, cars and houses' aren't everything.
Rocky can't see past the accumulated wealth, to realise that all he's bothered about (at this stage in the game) is losing face. After their argument on the beach, comes to a head. Rocky (and the audience) know that he could always beat 'Lang' (but was previously gripped with fear) With Adrian's love and Apollo's belief.....Rocky overcomes his fear and defeats the bully. Note that Adrian remarks "Ain't So Bad" earlier to Rocky (in regards to their dwellings, whilst they stay with Apollo) which Rocky (now beyond his 'fear' threshold) taunts Lang with in their rematch.

Which is why I never think of either, Creed, Lang, Drago, Gunn or Dixon as outright 'bad-guys' (just opponents of circumstance in the Rocky universe) designed (primarily) as metaphorical obstacles for Rocky to overcome.

Rocky "Pride"
Rocky II 'Doubt'
Rocky III 'Fear'
Rocky IV 'Revenge'
Rocky V 'Loyalty'
Rocky Balboa 'Belief

Rant over.

I mostly agree with this. Clubber had a legitimate grievance. Many dangerous up and coming boxers do find it hard to get a break because top ranked fighters have managers who find ways to pass them over. Were boxing a little less corrupt, Rocky probably would have been forced to defend against clubber a long time ago, but instead Clubber has to live like a poor man, beating everybody while living in Rocky's shadow wondering if he will ever get a fight. I can fully understand him showing up at the statue ceremony and calling Rocky out. It looks rude, but if that's the only way to get the media to put pressure on Rocky to fight him then he had to do what he had to do. He has his future to consider and deserved a shot. My only issues with Clubber are the way he spoke to Adrian and the way he treated Apollo in the first fight.

reply

I don't have a problem with the way he spoke to Adrian. He didn't use profanity and he was just trying to get a shot at the title. He had been ducked by Mickey and he wanted his shot.

I did not like the way he spoke with Apollo. Maybe he was just laser-focused on the fight and saw Apollo as a distraction. Maybe he didn't like him for some reason. I don't know his reasons but that scene made the audience dislike Clubber. Maybe that was the point of the scene.

reply

You're right. Rocky even repeats it several times during the film.

Evil? Maybe not. But as a person, as a human being, he's a bully, an arrogant prick, and generally a piece of shit. You'd have to be a bona fide asshole to admire a cocksucker like that.
