The US should not have considering the target was Afghanistan instead of Saudi Arabia (where most of the perpetrators came from) or the United States (where most of the perpetrators lived).

Agreed on Saudi Arabia. Many of the terrorists come from there. But many politicians on both sides are tied to Saudi Arabia, so an attack would never happen. The Taliban was HQ'ed in Afghanistan, and it was believed that was were Bin Laden was, a stronghold, hence the invasion.

I was responding to why attacking Saudi Arabia would accomplish nothing as the nationality of the 9-11 terrorists was inconsequential.
Still, Afghanistan was not indiscriminately attacked. Only tribal areas of known terrorist cells (or believed to be to be fair) were attacked. These happened to lie within Afghanistan's borders as did some of the attacked cells within Pakistan's borders, but we did not attack Pakistan as a nation either.
Whether attacking cells outside the U.S. or not was a good plan is another discussion.
