Coasted On One Song?

First of all, RIP once again to Sinead.

Secondly, did she, in reality, coast along on that one song?

Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant song. Absolutely a timeless classic. But 1. She never wrote it and 2. I've never heard any other song by Sinead O'Connor.

Sure, I could go on the youtube and - after watching multiple adverts - probably hear a few other songs she sang. But what I am saying is that in her entire career, from the 80s onwards, I never heard one other song of hers on the radio or being championed elsewhere in the media. Absolutely nothing.

Yet we hear now - and not just now because she's died but also previously - that she was an "amazing" talent, a wonderful songwriter, etc. But was she really?

She's arguably the most famous one hit wonder singer of all time... Apart from maybe Glenn Mederios.

She's most known for 2 things: the hit single Nothing Compares 2 U, and ripping up a picture of the Pope live on TV. The former is what catapulted her to stardom at the time and what gave her the platform to commit the latter. So I would say that yes, her career coasted on having that one hit single and were it not for that most of us would not have heard of her.

The fact is she made music before Nothing Compares and made it after it, but this is the song she is recognised for by Joe Public by a long shot, not any of her other songs that she wrote herself.

Yes, she coasted on one song. I don't think that that is even debatable.

She also pissed off almost the entire USA (which at the time was predominantly Christian/Roman Catholic) by ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live. She was already on her way down by the time that she did that, but that definitely sped up her decline. The USA wasn't the immoral demon infested country that it is now so stuff like that ended peoples' careers back then. I'm not saying that there weren't immoral demonic assholes back then- there were, but there were A LOT less of them.

Those are the two things that she is most remembered for.

As for her amazing writing talent... well, whenever anyone dies these days the news outlets turn them into saints and over praise their accomplishments. If CNN, MSNBC and FOX news existed during WWII we would have been hearing about how Hitler was just a misunderstood artistic genius.

A lot of artists coast on one song. I guess she sold enough to remain signed to a label.

I recall hearing another of her songs way back when her main hit came out and didn’t think much of it.

I guess so.

So would you consider her the greatest one hit wonder of all time? Or would Glenn Mederios top her? Or is there any other contenders?

reply

I honestly didn't think of her until I read she died. I don't think too many thought of her at all. Looking at her discography on Wikipedia it seems her albums made Top 100 at least somewhere in the world. So she was selling enough to maintain a record contract although she seemed to also change labels a lot.

I think there are other contenders for greatest 1 hit wonder of all time. Norman Greenbaum is still making money off Spirit in the Sky! Never heard of Glenn Mederios.

Well it's a helluva song. U2 put out albums for 30 years after their hits and not one of them gets played on the radio either.

use Brave or Opera to get rid of those pesky ads on youtube

She was a one hit wonder no doubt about it. I will say though that even though Prince wrote it she sang it way better than he did and i love Prince. Similarly to Whitney Housten no one really cares that Dolly Parton wrote it. She claimed that song.

Elton John Never wrote a song in his life

Most musicians and bands coast on one maybe two songs. 😂

Eh?

Shurely shome mishtake...
