Did Marrying Drew Barrymore Hurt Tom Green's Career?

If you look at his career around the time of his marriage to Drew Barrymore, it could easily be argued that something else irreparably damaged Tom Green's career, Freddy Got Fingered. A movie that Green starred in, wrote, and directed, Freddy Got Fingered was released a few months before he married Barrymore. Considered to be one of the worst movies ever made by many people, Freddy Got Fingered was even nominated for a Worst Picture of the Decade at the Golden Raspberry Awards. Retroactively praised by some viewers in recent years, the movie was box office poison at the time of its release.

No, Tom Green hurt Tom Green's career.

The problem with Tom Green was that he got overexposed. Hollywood seemed to be slow to realize that he was merely a niche comedian. He was sort of a proto-Eric Andre in that his whole schtick constituted of screaming, abrasiveness, gallows humor, and randomness-for-randomness-sake. And yet, he was being pushed hard as someone who could appeal to the youth market even though doing that type of act in front of a mass audience was bound to divide more than unite.

He never had it in him to be an A list star. He was pushed out into the sun and melted like a cheap candle.

No offense to Tom. My Opinion.

Tom Green also didn't attempt to modify or tone down his routine so that it would be more "palatable" the more famous he got. Like when he hosted SNL back in 2000, he brought in his own writers instead of trying to work within the confines of SNL's own writers. And Freddy Got Fingered just strikes me as Tom Green deliberately making the most surreal, f'ed up, gross, non-sensical movie possible on a $15 million budget. People inevitably, grew tired of his creepy, trollish, anti-comedy persona. He was basically hyped up as a new age version of Andy Kaufman but minus the subtlety or charm.

The real question is that why didn't marrying Tom Green hurt Drew Barrymore's career if possible? Drew had worked very hard in regards to rehabilitating her public image leading up to that point. She during the first part of the '90s, went from being seen this wild and trashy "bad girl" who makes movies like Poison Ivy and flashes David Letterman on his desk, to this adorably quirky nice girl making romantic comedies like The Wedding Singer and Never Been Kissed. It was just natural for many of us to side-eye a major star like Drew (and worry that she was "acting up" again) for hooking up with this weirdo cable TV comedian.

You're being really hard on Tom and on his "Freddy Got Fingered". I was just thinking about a particular sequence from that film earlier today and chuckling to myself. I'm not a fan of Tom from his MTV show, only from that movie which I know was widely panned when it was released but it has some hilarious stuff in it. I could watch Rip Torn perform in anything because he's such a great fucking actor.

They were a cute couple. Seemed sweet together. Sad it didn't last, though it was likely just another Hollywood marriage PR stunt. Amazing how quickly his star faded. His show was so popular with teens and started a trend, but was totally eclipsed by Jack Ass. His brand of humor was immediately dated and too tame once Jack Ass came on the scene and that stupid Ashton Kutcher "Punked" show. Tom started the trend but was left in the dust, seeming too weird and sensitive for the crueler pranks that became popular in the day. Drew abandoning him seemed part of that trend of his star fading.

The only thing I ever saw him in was "Charlie's Angels," and he had only two scenes in it.

Marrying Drew Barrymore made Tom Green's career.

I saw Freddy Got Fingered in the theater, and while I remember almost nothing about the movie, I do remember being stunned by how awful it was. I could hardly tell you any details about the film but I do remember quite clearly that I hated it.

As for his marriage to Drew, honestly I knew nothing about this until now. My question is: Why the hell would Drew marry Tom Green?

reply

Marrying her probably hurt his ability to get and sustain an erection.
