Did working on the Little House of the Prairie set ultimately cause Shannen to get cancer?

The show was afterall, filmed close to a contaminated nuclear site:

At the young age of 54, Landon died on July 1, 1991, from pancreatic cancer, just months after his diagnosis. And on Sunday, Reelz Channel will air its Landon-focused episode of Autopsy: The Last Hours of…, which investigates the proximity of the Little House on the Prairie set to the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, where there was a “partial meltdown of a nuclear reactor” in 1959, according to California Department of Toxic Substances Control.

“For nine years, Little House on the Prairie was filmed just 15 miles away from the Santa Susana Nuclear Laboratory,” a narrator says in PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek of the special.

According to costar Karen Grassle, who played Caroline Ingalls, “it took months and months for us to find the right outdoor location” to film the show, which ran from 1974-83. “Finally, this ranch was found out in Simi Valley,” she explains. “It was perfect for us.”

In a strange twist of fate, many of the cast members of Little House on the Prairie would end up getting cancer. Some even died of the disease over time, which is sad. Michael Landon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, as well as Victor French and Kevin Hagen.

These two both played Isaiah Edwards and Doc Baker, respectively. Charlotte Stewart was the only cast member who survived her cancer diagnosis. Many suspect that the cast members got cancer from working near radioactive materials that were often on set.

Sadly, several of the cast and crew of Little House died of cancer. Michael Landon died of pancreatic cancer in 1991, he was just 54. Victor French, who played the dependable neighbor that helped the Ingalls settle, Isaiah Edwards, also died of cancer when he was 54. Merlin Olsen played neighbor Jonathan Garvey, and he died of mesothelioma. Also, Kevin Hagen, the reliable Doc Baker, succumbed to esophageal cancer.

Most likely after reading this. Wow, that's sad.....

Breast cancer is common. It's not on the list of cancers related to Santa Susana Field Laboratory.

reply

Probably not. It is very easy to measure radiation levels so it wouldn’t be something that could be hidden especially if someone thought it was plausible due to the location it in the first place and made a point to check for it.

reply

IDK. Things get covered up all the time. It's a pretty wild story for sure.

reply

Who knows. Did Michael know about the danger?

reply

One obvious question for that is, why did the radiation kill Landon and others in less than 20 years, whereas it was 30+ years between Shannen's first year on that show and the year she was diagnosed?

reply

No.
