Job interviews?

Does anyone else like me, not see the point of job interviews? I mean for just basic jobs. To be more specific, I mean jobs that may only pay minimum wage, or not much better than that. Recently, I made a 45 minute drive, and after just a little more than 5 minutes, the idiots gave me the impression they had already somehow decided I wasn't the one for the job. I answered all their questions positively. I'm rather confident in my interviewing ability as I'm not new to it. I seriously was left scratching my head, as to how cynical people often are. And this job only paid a top rate of $23 per hour. Like, f*^k, wages like that were being paid 25 f*&king years ago. I'll never make an out of town trip and have my time and efforts wasted like that again. They're probably a bunch of Aerosmith fans. People suck!

If you hire someone you want them to show up.

Can someone show up for an interview? That's probably the first test.

You don't sound like a positive happy person and maybe that's why they didn't hire you.

I was going to reply but you pretty much said it all

I get it, it's a screening process. But I think it's rather ignorant to make someone take 2 or more hours out of their day to drive a distance, and then having them seemingly decide after asking a few questions and in just over 5 minutes shoeing them away. I've watched lots of youtube tutorials on interviews from both the employer and employee's perspectives. On my resume, it states I have forklift experience, however it's all been on a sit down and not a stand up forklift. But I would bet, that they've hired others with no stand up experience. Then they tell me I would be working in a cold refrigerated environment, and asked me if I would be okay with that. I said, I've worked outside lots over the years in freezing cold and sweltering summer heat. Then as I was leaving I said to them "I look forward to hearing back". And afterwards, I thought about it and sort of felt like an ass, for not telling them in a civil way how pathetic and cynical they were. And perhaps should have suggested they give me some gas $$$. Like, if someone made the effort I did, I would have felt compelled to spending maybe 10 or 15 minutes with them. And people wonder why some people don't want to work, people are ignorant assholes. So no, I'm not happy! Infact, I've come to rather hate my country do too so many people's lack of gratitude.

And you think someone wants someone with your attitude at work?

They offered a job, they didn't like you, the end. You're taking it personally for some reason.

I'd rather train someone from nothing than deal with a disgruntled already trained person.

reply

Maybe try looking at it from the other perspective. Would be willing to just give someone 23 dollars an hour, just to find out they are a total moron? A job interview should be an idiot test, and anyone in theory should be able to go in and tell an employer what they want to hear. But you would be surprised how many people mess it up. You may think you aced your interview, but you probably were too honest, and said or did something to let them know not to hire you.

reply

No, you need a job interview so the employer can see who is potentially applying for the position.. Is this the Gen Z way of approaching getting a job in 2024?? 🙄

reply

We have two positions available where I work, and we had 163 applications. How to you decide? Like others have said, do they show up for the interview? Are they on time? Did they make an effort at all. Also, with an interview you can get a better idea of who may or may not work well with the rest of the team.

reply

I get the interview process. What pisses me off is all the forms and onboarding and sometimes health checks and then give some person the job and they only last a few days to a few weeks and then quit. The company I work for spend a fortune on recruitment when they should be paying attention to retaining staff. It doesn't seem to matter.

reply

I agree. More effort ought to be spent to retaining good workers. It's said that it's less expensive to retain, even if it involves a raise in their wages, than it is to recruit and train new employees.

reply

My workplace is unique within my industry too. It takes 4-6 weeks to train someone than a year for that person to find their feet. Some never do and struggle and make all kinds of mistakes.

The company get fined when we don’t meet KPI’s as we are contractors. Yet they still treat us like shit and people keep leaving.

Some companies/managers are just arrogant and think they can do it their way.

reply

Some companies don't have the time or people to train anyone, so they refuse to hire anyone who doesn't have less than a year's worth of experience in their field, leaving the rest of us newbies out in the cold. It's even more insulting when they hire completely inexperienced non-white applicants (while lying to the white ones they turned down) and let them get away with doing terrible at their job.

reply

Maybe they just didn't like your goofy-lookin' face.

reply

"And this job only paid a top rate of $23 per hour."

Sounds pretty good , the min wage in UK , highest bracket of for over 21s is: $13.19

I have a bigger problem with interviewers lying to your face and setting traps with "gotcha" questions during the interview. It's one thing for them to trick you into giving away answers they don't want to hear. It's another to lie to your face about how they'll "get back to you," or worse, after going to the trouble to interview you at all, they then tell you they don't have any positions open, or they've put a "hiring freeze" on, and as you're leaving, you see them hiring a minority behind your back who probably is not as experienced as you are, and probably will be protected from being fired.

It makes me wonder how they would respond if I asked, "Would you have shown me this kind of behavior if I was black?"

reply

The correct verb in the hypothetical phrasing is "were", honey-babe. ;->
