The Deer Hunter

I just finished Hide and Seek with Robert De Niro, and wanted to see some clips from his supposed genius, in classic films. I can't imagine watching all of The Deer Hunter, as I hate war movies, but that Russian Roulette Scene is damn impressive.

There's barely any war scenes in it. Takes place mostly in Nowhere, Pennsylvania.

Good news for you, the first hour of The Deer Hunter is a wedding.

The thing with that movie ....

Deniro returns after a few years to vietnam to look for CW .
CW turns out to have become a professional Russian Roulette player.

Ludicrous (mathematically)

If he did it once a week , for 6 months, the odds of him being alive are 67 million to one.

Exactly. I never understood people who thought this was a great movie, it's ridiculous.

A good return to Vietnam movie is "The Five Bloods".
At least I think it was 5.

reply

8/10

I can't stand battle scenes. Luckily, there was only about 5 minutes of it in this movie. The first hour is the wedding.

I still haven't seen Deer Hunter. It's definitely on my list, but I have to be in a certain mood to sit through a war film.

reply

Then I'm going to assume you're not fond of "Apocalypse Now"??

reply

If you've already watched that scene, you've seen most of the "war" portion. It's much more about depicting the impact and residue of war on a group of people from a PA steel town.

And for my money, it's really Walken and Savage who deliver the goods in that sequence.

I watched it not too long ago. Not impressed. I found Platoon way better. And I can't stand war films.
