Did Disney ruin the magic of Star Wars?

3 Sequels. A few spin off movies. TV shows on streaming. A theme park. They own it and can do what they please with it.

Whereas before they took ownership of it, it was only 6 movies. The prequels were sort of disliked, or mildly liked, but the fans could accept them. It was George Lucas's story after all.

Now it's whatever Disney wants to do with them.

Is there still magic to 'star wars' for you? Can you separate yourself mentally from Disney's ownership and stewardship?

reply

Not as long as "The Mandalorian" is on the air! I LOVE that show as much as I love anything that ever appeared in the franchise!

The movies and other shows have been hit or miss.

reply

Star Wars was already destroyed by the prequels.

reply

I like the prequels.

reply

GROSS

reply

Most fans don't.

reply

If you don't like half of the Star Wars films George Lucas made , you are not a fan. Would you consider yourself a fan of a band if you didn't like half the output? Of course not.

reply

I like the prequels, too!

Very visual. Great music. Nice fight choreography. Innovative. Lucas was leading the movie industry in CGI effects and digital filmmaking. Even the maligned JarJar was to experiment with creating CGI people.

And there was a message and history lesson about how a democracy is turned into an authoritarian tyranny from within by politicians.

reply

Really Star Wars was ruined two years earlier with the release of the special editions.

The first prequel & JarJar was enough to make me have no further interest in the franchise what-so-fucking-ever!!!

reply

Gorge Lucas ruined Star Wars. The moment Jar Jar Binks uttered "exsqueeze me" it was all over.

"Whereas before they took ownership of it, it was only 6 movies."

There was more than that, starting not long after the first movie was released in 1977, i.e., the unbelievably bad Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978. There was also the 1985 Ewoks TV series, as well as Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984) and its sequel Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985).

And there was:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2003 TV series)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 movie)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 TV series)

But regardless of that, Disney completely killed my interest in future Star Wars installments in 2015 when I watched The Force Awakens. I never saw the Star Wars movies they made after that giant pile of horseshit, and I never will. I've loved the original trilogy since I was a kid in the '80s and they are still among my all-time favorite movies, and the prequel trilogy was okay at best, but those are the end of the line for me.

reply

It depends who you ask. Growing up I loved the OT, but overall found the Disney stuff disappointing (Rogue One was excellent and The Mandolorian is very good).

My daughter has seen them all, but has no problem with the Disney films, perhaps because her sense of history is far different.

Both the Rise of the Resistance and the Smugglers Run rides are awesome.

If I'm really honest and look deep into my heart, I only really like two and a half Star Wars films. I don't think Jedi is up to scratch, but it does an adequate enough job of finishing off the story, I suppose. It gets a pass.

But as far as I'm concerned, the whole thing should have ended in 1983.

Nevertheless, I'm delighted for people who still enjoy it that they've got so much of it to enjoy now. And the folk who hate-watch it are presumably having their own kind of cynical fun too. So, yay for Disney... or something.

reply

I definitely agree on the 2 and a half. With Empire being the only great movie.
I kinda compare Star Wars to something like Halloween, which I never really cared for, but the first movie is hailed as a classic horror film and the rest of the franchise really neithet add nor change anything. But if people love Halloween more power to them, I guess.

reply

Yeah. The first one is fun and obviously a significant pop culture artefact, Empire is clearly the best of the original trilogy, and -- of course -- you need Jedi because they couldn't just end the whole thing with the bad guys winning... but Jedi itself is no great shakes.

The prequels just don't work on so many levels and... I dunno, The Force Awakens just felt like I was intruding on someone else's nostalgia trip, so I gave up and just accepted it's not my cup of tea.

reply

1000% AGREE...TWO AND A HALF GOOD FLICKS...MAKING ME A CASUAL FAN...SO I APPROACH EACH NEW FILM AS A POSSIBLY ENTERTAINING TIME...NOTHING MORE...I WILL SAY MY PERSONAL NUMBER IS THREE AND A HALF...I QUITE LIKED ROGUE ONE...I HAVE NOT THE DESIRE TO WATCH ANY OF THE SHOWS.

reply

Jedi actually has my favorite SW scene when Luke basically tells the Emperor to f**k off. I could have done without the Ewoks though. Would have preferred Wookies.

Y'all need to take your rose colored nostalgia glasses off .
The new/middle ones are no worse than the old ones.
