The real question is: Where are mods 1 through 3?
Do they exist?
This reminds me of a prank we pulled our senior year. We brought 3 pigs to our high school and labeled them 1,2,and 4.

Your statement violates basic logic. Since we know Mods exist, they had to become Mods at some point. Therefore there exists some process of how one becomes a Mod. And I'm inquiring about that process.

Businesses have contracts with MovieChat. There are legal issues. The contracts are not void because a mod leaves. Someone runs this joint.

I joined in 2021. When I asked these questions I was stonewalled until I gave up. PM''s were never answered. And the old timers disappeared when I pushed the issue.

shareHownos, I can understand that you don't know. But it makes no sense. Kowalski thinks if the mod leaves, the business stops operating. Advertisers are paying someone to run their ads. Someone is collecting money. If the site stops operating, angry advertisers will want their money back. There are legal issues and they can't just shut down one day because Mod5 and Mod4 leave. If the Mods don't know, someone does.

I checked Jim's account once. He had only made like 130 posts. He was barely a presence here, EVER.
There's something real fishy about this. And I got the same reaction 2 years ago that you're getting now when you ask questions.
Maybe Mod4 and Mod5 can tell us how they became mods and how long they've been mods.
MovieChat was built by Jim and launched in Feb 2017. I joined the site within two weeks of its launch. Early on, Jim circulated a draft "Community Standards" document for member comments and asked for those interested in becoming moderators to contact him. Mod 1-3 were picked by Jim based on those replies.
In July 2017, Jim contacted me and Mod 4 and indicated that the other mods thought we would be good moderator candidates. I spoke to Jim by phone and agreed to do it.
Mods 1 and 2 disappeared before the end of 2017. Jim added a Mod 6 at some point in the next year. Both 3 and 6 have been inactive as moderators for the last three years or so.
Jim responds to urgent emails, i.e. "MovieChat is down", but seems otherwise generally disengaged from the site.

It appears that my theory has been validated, as I had postulated that the induction into the Order of the Mods was carried out by either Jim or the other Mods themselves.
Last question: Can a Mod unban a user if another Mod bans them?
If so, can you put in a good word for me with Jim and ask him to make me a Mod? This way if I use racial slurs and you ban me I could unban myself. ;-)

Uh, no. Mod4 and Mod5 were chosen to become Mods by the other Mods. They obviously informed Jim to get an Ok, and he personally reached out to the candidates. But it was the Mods choosing the Mods. (Except the first 3 who were chosen by Jim personally).
And Mod4 still interacts with Jim — not very much, but still has contact.

I was asked to become a Mod by one of the other Mods. It was then cleared with Jim who set up the account.
I have replied to every message I have ever received.
I don't know who Jim is, have very little interaction with him but my suspicion is that he may have been part of IMDB's staff who didn't want to see the boards die and so was able to get agreement to continue them here. It would explain his lack of presence here and how the place is left 'as is'. Just a theory though so don't read anything into it.
No idea what would happen if something were to happen to him. Perhaps he never thought about that? I will message him and ask.

The question was serious though: Can a Mod unban someone that another Mod banned? I am a Mod on a somewhat famous YouTube channel's livestreams. There, if a another Mod bans someone, I can't unban them, only the channel owner can. Is it the same here? Is Jim the only one who can unban people?
Mod 5 has given me the business on several occasions. Perhaps I deserved the warnings…but I don’t think so. In any event Mod 5 was a cool dude.
I don’t chat with Mod 4 very often but she seems pretty decent as well.
They are both good posters and they’re reasonable.
