Would a Terminator reboot be successful?

I mean like a Terminator movie with a brand new storyline and plot and some changes to accommodate modern sensibilities. We can have another movie with a Sarah Connor type character being chased by a Terminator. All the roles would be played by new actors (no more Arnold Schwarzenegger or whatever.)

depends on who they pick to be naked

reply

I dunno, maybe some up-and-coming body builder type actor?

You said a brand new storyline and plot, but then described the plot and storyline of almost every terminator film. Dark Fate was the last entry and attempted to reboot with the same story except they swapped John for a young girl, Skynet with Legion, Reese with android lady and it bombed at the box office.

Could it be successful? Sure it's possible, but we need something really different at this point and it needs to be well made. The only entry since, The Terminator, that was much different was Terminator Salvation and most people didn't like that.

reply

Overall I liked Salvation. What exactly do you mean by changes to accomodate modern sensibilities?

reply

I mean go with whatever modern trends to make it more palatable for the audience.

reply

I thought Salvation was great and 3rd best in the franchise. I wish we would have got some sequels from that film.

I'm not sure what OP meant by that. Maybe more action and CGI and less of a horror element in a rebooted/remake of the 1984 Terminator?

reply

Maybe a contributing factor to Dark Fate's failure would be Arnold is getting too old for the Terminator role? Like you said we need something different, maybe I wasn't being imaginative enough.

reply

Yeah I agree with that. I think Arnold being in that film was part of the problem and the franchise needs to move on or do something vastly different. We've played the send a terminator or person back in time to protect future leader/hero too many times now. The solution to everything seems to be to send a person/thing back in time lol.

changes to accommodate modern sensibilities

The problem at hand is quite simple - modern sensibilities are shit. Accommodating them can lead to a failed movie. As an audience, our values and perspectives are vastly diverse, making it hard to please everyone. If we could just establish a common cultural ground, we could once again create movies that resonate with everyone. Until that happens, most movies will simply be shit.

reply

Probably not.

reply

There have been sequels, spin offs and a TV show and somehow you want more?
There is not enough Term. stuff for you already?

reply

Agree, enough is enough. IMO, the original Terminator is a classic and along with the story line, should be left alone.

It’s like beating a dead horse.

reply

Nope.

The brand is pretty damaged after the last two (neither of which I actually hated). At the very least it needs to take a good, long break. Then maybe a relaunch without Schwarzenegger.
