I'm female and I can't stand romance films. Give me a good murder or terrorist film any day.

reply

Try Camilla Läckberg's Fjällbacka series. It's chick lit mixed with murder mystery. And it's damn good.

reply

Do you know where it's streaming ?

reply

No idea. I know there's some mini-series, or series of movies, which I haven't seen, so I can't tell if it's any good. I was talking about the books. Sorry.

reply

Yes! Some Like It Hot!

this is going to sound gay, but my take is that since these are primarily fantasy-fare for women,

the men are more attractive than the women. but the women are very competent, empowered, businesslike, except when they are playing the role of being romanced.

so its not a lot of fun for us guys. we get our kicks out on highway 61.

Avoid modern movies, romance ones included. In modern movies, female characters are basically male characters played by an actress.

Not really my favorite genre, but I'm not opposed to watching them. Some very good movies listed.

The two I'll add are - The Quiet Man (1952) and a quirky Adam Sandler film - Punch Drunk Love (2002)

reply

I'd say (some) men enjoy romance comedies. I absolutely do. Particularly when there's a brilliant writer behind them (cough Richard Curtis cough).

Pure romance... well, not so much.

reply

Generally no, but there are exceptions: The Princess Bride, Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation.

I sorted my Letterboxd by genre to find out what romance films I have rated highly and most of the films listed I wouldn’t call “romance” at all (Vertigo and Play Misty For Me were two that made me lol).

Anyway, this is what I came up with:

Moonstruck (1987)
Annie Hall (1977)
The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
Now Voyager (1942)
The Shape of Water (2017)
Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Most rom-coms on my list were rated 3/5 or lower.
