πŸš— Have you ever driven across the US? πŸ—ΊοΈ

Or even a good chunk of it?

I've driven from Minneapolis, Minnesota to:
Phoenix, Arizona
Tampa, Florida
Seattle, Washington
Boston, Massachusetts and on to York, Maine
Columbia, South Carolina
Also Phoenix to Muncie, Indiana.
(And yes, I also drove back from all these places.)

Back when my son was growing up in the 80's we took family "see America vacations" for about 8 years in a row. We traveled all over the country with a pop-up camper. The farthest west we went was to the Grand Canyon and on another trip we went up into New England, which really isn't that far from Ohio. The longest trip we took in total miles and days was an 18 day adventure to Mt Rushmore, Black Hills, we camped one night at the base of Devils Tower, and went white water rafting on the Snake River.

reply

That's sounds like a nice adventure.

A girlfriend and I drove from Mpls to Seattle when I was in high school (about a hundred years ago πŸ˜‰). We drove the interstate, but when we were going through Montana at night, the highway turned into a gravel road. Apparently, that segment of the interstate had yet to be built. That was weird.

reply

In 1960 my grandparents took me on a three week vacation all over the east coast. I remember thinking how exciting it was to drive on the PA turnpike. When I was older I wondered why that was and then it dawned on me that at that time the interstate was just starting to be built and in many areas people still drove on two lane highways to get from point A to point B.

reply

You're right! Some of us are old enough to at least vaguely recall that interstates didn't go everywhere. It took years. Thank you, President Eisenhower!

reply

THAT SOUNDS AMAZING...WISH I HAD BEEN YOUR SON IN THE 80S.

reply

Nope. I've been to almost every state east of the Mississippi River but few west of it. Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, California, Minnesota, and both Dakotas, but the first two of those were the only ones I drove to.

reply

Weird that I've been to all the states around me except South Dakota. I hope to go some day.

reply

East of the river, I've been to all except Alabama, South Carolina, ans Wisconsin. All at least once by car.

reply

I've been to or through quite a few east of the Mississippi, but not VA, WV, LA, AL, AR, MD, DE, and CT. In the west, it's only WY, UT, NV, WY, and OR that I haven't been in or through. Haven't been to AK, but have been to HI.

reply

Louisiana is mostly west of the Mississippi River. I survived Mardi Gras, three times. ;) I worked in DC for several years so I've been to VA, DC, and MD a ton of times.

reply

I was born and still live about 1 hour from New Orleans and I’ve had more Mardi Gras adventures than I’d like to remember, and several I wish people would forget. πŸ˜†

Good times but I don’t recommend it any more these days. It’s a bit more dangerous than you want to be around and get plastered.

reply

The last time I went was about 30 years ago. I was 27. I thought, I'm getting too old for this shit.

reply

Duh, geographic brain fart on my part. πŸ™„πŸ€

reply

I've never been farther West than the fine State of Kansas...It's lovely there and Kansans are quite nice

I've been up and down the East Coast, it really is amazing how nice everyone is outside of New York and New Jersey

reply

Several times. I grew up in NY and my mom's family lives in the Bay Area (California). We drove cross country two or three times when I was growing up. One of those times we went even further, NY to CA and then driving south through Mexico almost all the way to Guatemala.

As an adult I drove from CA to NY when I got out of the service, I had been stationed in CA. Went through an early spring winter storm in Wyoming, the most scared I've ever been driving a car.

When I lived in Minneapolis I drove to NY and back once. After that, I said I would never drive that far again.

reply

Oh yes! :D My family went on many, many road trips when my brother and I were kids. It was a family tradition to do at least one or two (sometimes three) summer vacations to different places, or to visit relatives. Sometimes we flew if it was too far away to drive. We lived in Central Illinois during much of my childhood, and we drove to many places:

- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (grandparents)
- Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin
- Chicago & St. Louis, Illinois
- St. Paul, Minnesota
- Kansas City, Kansas
- Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Williamsburg and Norfolk, Virginia
- Mackinac Island, Michigan
- Huntsville, Alabama
- Omaha, Nebraska
- Orlando, Florida (Disneyworld)
- Washington D.C.
- Dallas, Texas

In 2012, my family moved from Texas to California, and I helped in the move. We drove 1600 miles along the same highway that follows Route 66, so I got to see signs pointing to all the places mentioned in the song.

I've done more road trips in recent years too. We live in northern CA now, but it's a big state, and it takes a while to get places by car, particularly if your going from one end of the state to the other. On these trips, I've actually helped with the driving :)

- Las Vegas, Nevada
- Lake Tahoe, Disneyland, Solvang, and Moreno Valley, California

reply

I'd really like to visit Colonial Williamsburg some day. And I think some folks don't really understand just how big California is. I've been to both Disneyland and Disney World - side note: I liked Disneyland better. Mackinac Island is another spot I'd like to visit. Our family visited the Wisconsin Dells, but that was too many years ago, when we were kids.

reply

Yes I've been back and forth from coast to coast several times, and I've also been up and down the EAST and WEST coast areas as well, but have never been to the upper regions or to the states located in the mid section of the country around the Canadian border (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Minn, Wisconsin, Michiagan).

So if you subtract those 8 states (plus Hawaii and Alaska), the CHUNK of it that I've been in is about 40 states.

reply

That's actually quite a lot of the country you've been through or to.

reply

Yes I've driven back and forth across lots of miles ...

plus my former BIL was also a truck driver so one could also hop into it to go visit my sister and her kids and the rest of my siblings and their kids.

And Then one could also relax and watch TV on the top bunk without needing to do any of the driving.

reply

Me and my parents have almost annual road trip from Chicago to the West Coast and back.

reply

I like car travel. Sure, at times it gets a bit tedious, but I do enjoy getting at least a snapshot of parts of it.

reply

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BORN AND RAISED...LONGEST CAR TRIP IVE TAKEN WAS TO IDAHO AND BACK IN A WEIRD FOOTBALL SHAPE TO SEE MORE STATES AND STUFF...I FLEW TO NEW YORK AND LIVED FOR A FEW MONTHS AND FLEW BACK...THATS THE EXTENT ON MY TRAVELS.

reply

My sister and I flew to NYC from Chicago when I was 8 and she was 10. We went to visit our great aunt, who took us to see the ocean for the first time. She also took us to Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. Which I now realize means I've been through MD and into VA. Forgive me. It was a long time ago and I was just a kid. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―
