Is there any sound argument for giving a life sentence for non violent offenses?

It’s pretty fuckin ridiculous if you think about it

reply

Give the death penalty instead of...eventually their lawyer will strike a plea deal to avoid it and the murderer will shockingly cough up the dead body in exchange.

Happens a lot...

reply

Treason.

reply

I am curious as to what non violent crimes would get life.

reply

Some of these depend on the extent:

- Downloading underage porn
- Fraud
- Wiretapping
- Releasing personal information
- Harboring a fugitive
- Being a fan of the band Kiss

reply

Yeah? None of those under any circumstances should constitute anywhere close to a life sentence.

reply

You say that until someone steals your personal information and frames you for stuff you didn't do or if someone hacked into your daughter's phone and released her nudes. And there's no excuse for being a Kiss fan.

reply

Hey! I like Kiss.

reply

No exceptions. Off to the big house you go.

reply

I've even seen them live (Unmasked - 1983).

reply

You're just doing the prosecution for me now.

reply

And I wear a kiss t-shirt.

reply

I really hope your next response isn't Gene Simmons underwear and Paul Stanley socks.

reply

If he likes Kiss that much, he should be sent to the booby hatch instead of jail.

reply

Guilty as charged
It was my environment!!

reply

“ - Harboring a fugitive”

I DIDN’T KILL MY WIFE!!

Seriously though, a life sentence for that?? Way draconian, man!

reply

If he's a murder, you're harboring someone who could very well murder someone again.

reply

Well that’s a bit more specific, but still, I think there would be many cases where someone is manipulated by the fugitive to hide them, and I’m not sure if that deserves a life sentence. Seems a bit harsh to me 🤷‍♂️

reply

That's why I said in my original post "some of these depend on the extent". Harboring an illegal immigrant is one thing. Harboring a murderer is another.

reply

Even harbouring a murderer might have extraneous circumstances to consider. Like I said, manipulation is a big one. What if it the person who is hiding the murderer is their partner who has experienced domestic violence and is in fear of their own life? Does that otherwise innocent person deserve to spend their entire life incarcerated for that? I personally think it’s low-end offending. Where’s the compassion dude??

reply

No, I agree with you. I'm just saying that there are times where the things I mentioned could warrant a life sentence. My exams were just general and would need a more nuanced discussion.

reply

No. It's Aerosmith!

reply

They're less bad. At least they don't rely on the makeup gimmick.

reply

If they did wear makeup, at least they'd have something going for them. 😉

reply

What the..?!?

When did this become the Aerosmith-hate board?

Frankenmonkey Rocks✊

reply

How dafuq can a metalhead be a fan of the Airsmiths?

reply

I don't have to explain myself to you Mister Man, I'm too busy enjoying Toys In The Attic😛

reply

I have never liked Aerosmith. Mainly because of how campy Tyler is, not to mention he's a very sub-par singer (like Ozzy), but it was really brought to the front of my mind by a certain regular, here and I had to pile on. 😁

reply

OMG, Tyler AND Ozzy...
Well that's just hurtful😢

reply

Lol!

reply

I don't remember ever hearing of this

What I would like to hear is a sound argument for releasing rapists and cold blooded killers...too many of these predators do it again upon release and unlike property crimes there is no way to make up for sex crimes or murder

reply

Yeah agree I’m referring more to drug dealing and petty theft

reply

I think some habitual criminals need to be kept out of the general populace.

reply

Bernie Madoff deserves life imo.

reply

that's the best example i can think of where a life sentence is warranted.

he smashed people's dreams.

reply

I recently read that he is dying from kidney disease and is seeking a compassionate release, but it was denied.

reply

I agree. He destroyed many people's lives, many of which committed suicide

reply

pimps

reply

Does this happen ?

reply

Are you joking? Do you have any idea how many people are serving life sentences without parole for drugs and theft?

reply

It's why I asked. A life sentence in Britain is only about 25 years and they will do half of it alot of the time then released.

It's very rare here to be given a whole life sentence without parole.

Tbh, it's one thing I admire about America. The judges don't fuck about with sentences.

reply

It’s not admirable, honestly our justice system is horribly broken. Murderers do 2-3 years and walk, guys locked up for life on drug charges. It’s fucking insane.
