Would you send your boys to the boy scouts?

Latest news is that there was 92,000 lawsuits for sexual abuse.

I'm sure that their procedures have tightened regarding hiring and alone time, but still, I would be concerned.

I'm also concerned about boy scouts marching in gay parades.

reply

No.

My son and daughter were both Scouts for years, I was Den leader for the Cubs (the youngest kids)
Many of the adult leaders were the married parents of the children and we all knew each other from churches or schools

They were really great people and we had a fun time for years

I've heard of the very bad stories but 92,000..?
And pride parades??
I'd question that news source

reply

Same here - the leaders were entirely made up of the parents and it was a great experience. I admit we were a bunch of wild knuckleheads who didn't take the whole thing very seriously, but we had a great time on camping trips and different outings.

Concerning the 92,000 accusations, there have been a lot of ambulance chasers trying to get people to testify as part of a class action suit, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear many are in it for the $$$.

reply

I wonder how many of those are legit. I loved being in the Boy Scouts. It was great fun. Liberals set out to destroy it and it's working.

reply

I will avoid the political side of your post but certainly agree that The Scouts were great fun for my little Sister and myself as well as my own kids

I really hate these stories and some may be sickeningly true but 92,000 cases?!?

Malarkey.

BETWEEN FILMS MY TV IS ALWAYS ON ANTENNATV...EVERY COMMERCIAL BREAK THEY HAVE THE MOLESTING SCOUTS AD..."THE BOY SCOUTS HAVE ALREADY TAKEN YOUR INNOCENCE FROM YOU,DONT LET THEM TAKE YOUR OPPORTUNTY FOR COMPENSATION AS WELL"...I WAS IN THE SCOUTS MYSELF,NOBODY EVER TOUCHED ME...IM GETTING SICK OF THIS SHIT

reply

I'm really tired of it too
It's all over my local FM Rock station

There were probably some bullet-worthy scumbags in The Boy Scout leadership but we never met any here and I know lots of former Scouts

The fact that the ads are for some disaster-chasing lawyers promising money for claims...If anything these dirtball lawyers are disrespecting the actual cases by offering a casting call for anybody with a 'story'

reply

Wherever you have kids, you'll have predators. That's just life. Chances are small, and you shouldn't give up Scouts or similar because of it. Nothing in life is risk-free, though.

The question is: why so many claims? Well, Scouts is filing for bankruptcy, and the money they have, it will be distributed among the people who filed a claim. So, probably, you'll have a few ones that are real... and a lot that just want some easy money.

Perhaps you should consider filing a claim too. If you want some easy money, it's a sure check.😄

reply

We take precautions

I don't know why the BSA is going under, I hope it doesn't have anything to do with greedy lawyer fabrications

As to the actual abusers we can probably all agree on what should be done with them at least

reply

True, the problem is to identify actual abusers. There's rarely any evidence in these cases. So it's about whether you believe the accuser or the accused.

It was easier a few years ago. One complain could be fake, but a few complains involving the same person... and you could be sure there was something rotten there.

Nowadays... even if you have more than one accuser, who knows? Many people don't have problem filing accusations once they smell the money.

reply

I remember when I was a cub scout in the 70s that my parents wouldn’t let me go to the camp outs for this reason.

reply

The 70s "free love" was "free lust" and child molestation ran rampant.

But the culture was that there was nothing wrong with pleasure.

I'm glad that the 80s cleaned up the smutty culture.

reply

One of the dumber comments I've seen recently.
Well, that's not true, because dumb comments come a penny a piece around here, but still, ....
People just post whatever dumb thought flies threw the vacant space where their mind should occupy.
Unless it's part of the effort to truly dumb-down the US so much we will allow dictators to take over in order to keep us safe and pure.
Soon we will see claims that in the 70s parents put Mary Jane in their kid's food, just cuz ... that's what they did back then! And the good ol' 80s put a stop to it, toot sweet !

reply

I question your sources...are you just making stuff up now?

Thank goodness the 80's put a stop to all of the shenanigans🙄

reply

I didn't realize the Boy Scouts were still relevant. It's an organization I always associate with the 1950s or 1960s.

reply

The Boy and Girl Scouts are as relevant today as ever, maybe more so

In the Troop I helped to run we hosted 3-4 dozen kids twice a week from a diverse spectrum of families

We did fishing trips, crafts, cooking/baking projects, US Flag ceremonies, campouts, forest skills and Award Nights once a month...The kids loved it and they developed some good skills

reply

Like all thoughtful and concerned adults, I'm saddened beyond words the BSA has been reduced to this, just as the Catholic Church has. All the good is undone because of bad actors we can't ferret out proactively.
I was never a Scout (nor Catholic), but I can see how camaraderie among young men and teaching personal and social values should make for a better society, for those who choose that path.
I'm not a joiner, but I see the value they were trying to espouse. Very sad how it has come to this.

reply

You make a good comparison between The Church and The Scouts, a sad but good one

Both are fine organizations that have done a great deal of good but have both been infiltrated by an unknown number of creeps

I feel the numbers are inflated but that's just my personal experience and the experience of everybody I know

reply

Well I'm a catholic and a former boy scout and NOTHING untoward happened.

We once had a group shower in front of the scout master because the camp grounds didn't have private showers, but he didn't touch us up!

reply

Yes, and this is the point I'm making.
The concept of BSA is a good thing. I sometimes wished I had been a Scout.
Then again, I sometimes wish I were a Veteran of the Armed Forces, just to get the bennies and respect.
It's not always a clean hand-off.

reply

I think they let girls in too now which I think is against the whole idea of it.

But no, I wouldn't trust a lot of those groups because of the possibility of sexual assaults and abuse. They no doubt do a lot of SJW preaching as well now too.

reply

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES,PREPAREDNESS,TEAMWORK,FIRE,POCKET KNIFE,HATCHET SAFETY AND HANDLING,GENERAL LIFE AND NATURE SKILLS...THE ONLY THING INHERENTLY BOY ONLY ABOUT THE BOY SCOUTS IS THE NAME.

reply

I know some families who let their daughters join boy scouts. They are working to get their eagle scout badges.

I have no qualms with boy scouts marching in gay parades.

reply

Really? How can you separate pride in gay identity from pride in gay sex? You can't. Therefore children SHOULD NOT be marching.

reply

I can separate them fairly easily
