Why is the US so obsessed with sports? They are boring as fuck.

I will never understand that, so many things are far more interesting and entertaining. With such limited free time I find it absolutely mind boggling how much of it people spend watching and discussing sports.

Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy PLAYING some sports, but that’s not the source of the majority of this country’s interest in them. People are literally obsessed with watching, studying and discussing sports. They worship athletes. Drives me insane, and instantly separates me from a good chunk of the population in a major way. No matter how much I have in common with someone, they always seem to be obsessed with at least one sport.

reply

Shhh! I’m trying to watch the game here.

reply

Well played😬

YOU ARE OBSESSED WITH OTHER PEOPLES CHOICES AND INTERESTS...MAYBE SPEND MORE TIME ON YOURSELF...MIGHT HELP WITH ALL THE JEALOUSY AND BITTERNESS.🙂

reply

go lakers

reply

Yeah I don't get it either, but I'm unusual that way. Its a personality quirk that I didn't develop for whatever reason. The latest ballgame scores and the minutiae of its star players is so mind-numbingly irrelevant to me that I find it borderline offensive. I dunno its like, some guys like heavy metal, other guys like drinking, still other guys like hunting, but for most guys sports is the thing they like to obsess about to make life a bit more fun (besides women). I find sports to be a rather shallow and useless thing to obsess about, but what do I know, I binge-read movie forums during my free time.

reply

Which country might that be?

(yes, I know you are American, but this is a board on the world wide web, and there are many people here who aren't from the USA)

reply

Sorry, a bit ethnocentric of me....the US

reply

To be fair, (I'm a little grumpy today and I apologize for my snark) I think you could say that almost all of the world is obsessed with sports. People look at you so strangely when you say that you don't like __________ or couldn't care less about this team or that team. I agree that it's a lot more fun to play a sport than it is to watch it.

reply

Yeah I don’t get it

reply

I love watching sports, but have never looked at someone funny for not being a fan. Everyone likes what they like.

reply

I guess the same thought applies in most countries
It certainly does in the UK, the (awesome ) sitcom "The I.T. Crowd" has episodes with the non sports loving protagonists struggling to fit in with the crowd.

Scrubs and Big Bang theory have similar episodes in U.S.

reply

IN YOUR OPINION, of course ;)

I like watching rugby league, tennis and athletics (love it around Olympics time - always enjoy flicking on the TV and watching whatever's on at the time). I'm not obsessed though and honestly sport would rank lower than movies and music in terms of my favourite pastimes.

I think Australia would give America a good run for your money in terms of sports obsession. Especially if you live in Victoria, AFL football is like a religion there. And let's not even start on about cricket!!

Live and let live though Buff, there are certainly worse things for people to be passionate about than sport. Think about how you would react seeing a thread stating unequivocally that kayaking and fishing are as boring as fuck. Not to you, ay?

reply

Yeah I have no problem living and letting live but I can’t escape sports, everywhere I turn it’s being shoved down my throat. Not so with my hobbies, I don’t impose them on anyone nor are they extremely over represented.

reply

How is being shoved down your throat?

reply

It’s literally all anyone wants to talk about, in person and online I am beyond sick of it.

reply

U R delusional - sports is rarely mentioned or discussed on this site. I probably bring it up as much as anyone and that is infrequently. Although now that I know that you enjoy it so much, I'll be sure to talk more about football since the NFL starts this week.

Go Dolphins!

reply

Weird, the only thread here mentioning sports is this one.

reply

usa here
i only watch the ufc

Reasons why people love sports :

•Feeling a connection with team and
or city

•Competition

•Exciting plays

•Visual enjoyment of a well executed
play

•Buzzer Beaters, Hail Marys, Walk Offs
can be the ultimate moment of drama
if you enjoy every reason listed above

•Fantasy sports and legal sports betting also can add enormous excitement

I love the sights and smells in a ballpark or stadium and it's unique to anything else I can think of other then maybe concerts. Other then concerts or sports what else would bring 100,000 people together all packed in together?

That alone is something I enjoy about sports, crowd watching

reply

Yeah still doesn’t explain the insane level of attention they get
