Movies that were supposed to launch a franchise... but BOMBED!

Which are (the most infamous) movies that were supposed to launch or continue franchises that were cancelled because of poor box office performance/audience reception?

The Mummy (2017) | The Dark Universe

John Carter (2012)

November Man (2014) | Smaller scope movie vs the previously mentioned, but I remember Brosnan saying that he had already signed on for sequels (yes, plural).

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Flash Gordon

Flash deserved a sequel or two
I call bullshit on NO second Flash

Me too! I love that movie so much. I think it would be cool if they did a sequel today and just piggybacked off the original (with a new cast, obviously).

"The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins"

Came in here to say these two. Loved them both and it is a crime they didn't spawn more.

As a fan of the comic LoEG, I was happy that they didn't make any more movies.

You know, I thought the movie had potential. It wasn't that bad IMO. A stronger script and a bit closer to the comic and it might have worked. Maybe not making Nina a vampire, ditching Tom Sawyer, not using Connery who I felt tried to really take over the film...

I actually loved the addition of Dorian Gray.

reply

Those are all valid observations. I, too, didn't mind Dorian Gray. Making Mina a vampire and not a strong leader was their biggest mistake. There are surely worse movies but I can't give this above a 5/10. It could/should have been spectacular.

reply

I think we're in the same boat, buddy. It should have been epic but was just kinda forgettable.

They need someone as cynical as Alan Moore to be show runner of a mini series from a company other than HBO or Netflix.

Willow (1988)

Howard the Duck (1986)

Two rare bombs from an A list creator and a A list director.

(George Lucas, Ron Howard)

I can't remember the last time I've seen Willow (come to think of it, I have never seen it!)

For the LONGEST time Howard the Duck was not shown on cable.(decades after release)

NEVER ever have I seen Willow shown on cable. I think it is hidden in a vault somewhere deep deep underground. Two bombs in a row would crush Lucas's reputation as a genuis and was in danger of being labeled as a has-been.

Willow is available on Disney+. Fantastic film. "Out of the way, peck."

THOSE ARE MY TWO FAVORITE LUCAS FILMS.🙂

That was a good one. Sad that it didn't do well.
