Movies that were supposed to launch a franchise... but BOMBED!

Which are (the most infamous) movies that were supposed to launch or continue franchises that were cancelled because of poor box office performance/audience reception?

The Mummy (2017) | The Dark Universe

John Carter (2012)

November Man (2014) | Smaller scope movie vs the previously mentioned, but I remember Brosnan saying that he had already signed on for sequels (yes, plural).

Eragon.

Did okay financially, but fully bombed critically. It is based on a terrible book series, and thankfully they did not continue with the planned sequels.

reply

It's just "Dragon" but with an E instead of D. What a silly name.

Mortal Engines (2018)

Ender's Game (2013)

Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

The Rocketeer

How? Evidence?

I like you, by the way. I’d just like more info.

Also, why does this movie title, which is interrogative, not have a ? at the end?

reply

That movie did not bomb. Developing a sequel was difficult because of the rights to so many characters and need to collaborate between studios, it's a small miracle what they were able to do on the first film... also the script was never ready 100%. The first movie had a lot of adult jokes which I'm pretty sure Disney would not allow nowadays.

reply

True, all of that, but I think it was meant to launch a franchise, but due to the problems they had making it, and parents disapproving of all the adult themes, I'm not surprised it ever got a sequel or a cartoon series based on it.

reply

Maybe it did have a "?" and I forgot to put it on there. I was just thinking of a movie off the top of my head that never was able to launch a franchise.

reply

I suppose you could read up about it at the DisneyWiki. I could swear I read somewhere that it was supposed to launch a franchise that never got off the ground.

reply

Jupiter Ascending? I’m not sure if it was intended to start a franchise or not, but it seems likely.
