Directors who always get a pass.
Directors who can make a bad movie, but people will excuse it just because it's them.
Quentin Tarantino
Christopher Nolan
Terrence Malick
Wes Anderson
Francis Ford Coppola

I like Malick, but no passes here....technically, he’s usually very solid but his last few in terms of execution, I just don’t know what to say...
shareI posted hlheee a while ago talking about how Malick's films have been mediocre recently, and while the comments were nice toward me, they still felt that he was still a legend and how anything he puts out is worth watching.
shareHard to say, the more successful they are the more 'haters' they seem to attract
Take Nolan for instance, he's written, produced and directed movies that were excellent and generated billions at the box office
To fanboys he's a god yet there are plenty that shout 'turd' whenever his name comes up (maybe those are just trolls..?)
I guess I would add Spielberg to your list but oddly enough he has plenty of haters too
Spielberg.
shareDefinitely. No matter what Spielberg does, people fall all over themselves. He hasn't made a great movie in years and years.
shareAnd his best movies like ET, Jaws, Jurrasic Park, Indiana Jones, etc. are actually not that good artistically, just that they were super successful in box offices. But he never gets the flak as Michael Bay does. Spielberg is basically a more respected Bay, for whatever reasons.
shareDefinitely Tarantino and Nolan.

Different strokes etc... personally I think The Aviator is one of his worst films... I agree that his work has been hit and miss since.
shareTarantino films are always terrible, I really don't get the appeal.
At least part of his appeal is the dialogue he writes and of course the great soundtracks of his movies
He also attracts truly top level talent to his projects and must be fairly reasonable to work with (despite his turd like public image) because the Hollywood gossip machine whirrs away 24/7 and he's always got top talent... No way is Sam 'Bad Mofo' Jackson putting up with any bullshit again and again...
He can envision a scene with the best of them...When The Bride takes out The Crazy 88 and has her showdown with O Ren-Ishii in the snowy garden it's like an action flick that ends with poetry
Likewise, when the KKK ride down on Django's camp at night to torture him to death those horse charge shots rival Braveheart's similar scenes
Some strikes against him: the racial slurs are overdone, the sexual violence is not really needed and the 'foot thing' is somewhat off putting
I feel like he just keeps upping the ante the over the top violence more than anything. I still haven't been able to make it through Pulp Fiction, tried a few times. Some of the dialogue in Reservoir Dogs was ok but overall I find his desire to be over the top quite boring.
shareFair enough, different strokes👌
shareOr some people just had a different opinion about some of their movies than you apparently did.
Coppola is an odd choice for this list. His inconsistency after that great run he had in the 70s is pretty widely recognized. Eve his most hard core fans would not deny it, I think.
Not just in my opinion. Critically as well. Look at Terrence Malick's latest films. They've been terribly received but no one talks about how he is on a decline.
