Technological terms are being changed in top technological companies because they're racist

"The terms "master" and "slave," used to describe the relationships between two computer hard drives and or between two camera flashes, have come under scrutiny because of their association with America's history of slavery. Similarly, "whitelist" and "blacklist," terms for allowing and denying access to a service, are being revisited because of their potentially racial overtones. "

Golang, the language developed years ago by google, has already eliminated any reference to 'master/slave' and 'blacklist' or 'whitelist' in their code.

It's all getting very silly, isn't it?

reply

They need to remove those terms from The Bible too.

reply

But The Bible is HISTORY!
You can't erase history

😬

reply

Why is it always history? It's time to change it to hertory.

reply

And leave the non-binaries out of course! Typical.

reply

Or non gender-specific-tory even!

reply

I vote we change master and slave to giver and receiver. No-one could possibly be offended by that, right? Anyone? No?

reply

Next, male and female connectors...

reply

Those male connectors are always raping female connectors.

I was just about to reply this.

I hope that article is a parody.

reply

The article was published two days ago. And the changes in golang (google's languages) were done June 9, three days ago.

Next, chess grandmasters...

reply

Doesn’t Vader say he’s the master in Star Wars? I guess they are going to have to fix that.

reply

Surely! Also, kungfu masters and master chefs.

reply

They talk about master and slave terms used in connection with HDDs, but they are used only in the old ATA interface which was replaced by SATA over 10 years ago. They really dug deep for this one.

reply

This is what happens when you ignore problems and pretend a significant portion of the population don't matter, eventually people overreact.

edit/ uh oh, kkk got his feelings hurt.

I'm fine if they start using the terms "dominant" and "submissive", instead.

reply

Typical Americans... thinking everything is about them. Yes, master/slave terminology came from master/slave relationship of real world slavery. But real world slavery doesn't means it's always about American's history of slavery. Slavery came long before USA even existed.
