I feel sorry for people who...

don't read. As in books. They are missing out on such a wonderful word. I caught the reading bug in 4th grade when we read The Hobbit as a class. I was so taken, I got chided for reading ahead but I couldn't put it down! I still LOVE immersing myself in a good book as often as I can.

I have a Hobbit/Rings Trilogy box set I bought in 1981. One of my first purchases that was special to me and a valued treasure today.

reply

Is your Tolkien set of books in a cardboard cube with the covers printed on the exterior?

reply

The box is gold with different elven(?) symbols and the books are red, blue, green and yellow with scenes from the stories on the covers.

reply

Ok, I never owned that one but I've seen it
I may buy that at some point, those were great books!

I had the late 70s cardboard case set...It's gone now (I was a clumsy and forgetful kid :( but it was a pretty cool set👍

reply

70s. How cool is that?
I found 3 of these on eBay for different amounts but none over $50, I think. It's been a couple months.

reply

Did you ever have the records you could listen to while reading the comic they came with?

I had a few including The Hobbit, Conan and I seem to recall some superhero ones

Great stuff!

reply

No, it sounds pretty cool. 70s-80s high tech?

reply

Well 8 tracks were all the rage then...I kind of miss those!

reply

In '81 I drove a '78 Firebird. Eight track, power booster and Jensen coaxials. High tech baby!

reply

I had a mid 80s T-Bird
Total babe magnet!
5.0 8 cyl with fat racing tires and a hood scoop

The T-Tops leaked which was very annoying:/

reply

Oh yeah. Fox platform. A whole bunch of parts interchangeable with the Mustang. Great car!

reply

The Hobbit was a favorite of mine, I must have read it 3 or 4 times and still have it
I'm mostly into non-fiction (crime, history) these last few years but I have Stephen King's last one which I'll get to soon

So many of us are on screens so often it is hard to make time for a good read:/

reply

I didn't start reading until my early 20's. Better late than never I guess.

You can feel sorry for me if you want to because I was a voracious lifelong reader until I got PTSD and then suddenly couldn't read anymore 😢. It's finally starting to improve, thank god. I could read email, or posts, or things that were short, but that was it.

When I was a kid I always checked out the maximum number of books from the library and would come home feeling like the richest person in the world because I could choose any of them to read! I think 14 was the maximum.

There's nothing like that feeling of having started a good book, maybe a couple of chapters in where you *know* you're good and hooked and have almost the entire book ahead of you to savour. Except you'll probably end up reading the whole thing as fast as you can because it's that good 😄

I've had friends who just never got into it and felt sad it was something we'd never be able to share.

reply

Bummer. I hope you get your fix back soon ;)
I will have lost something precious if I couldn't read.

reply

😘 Thanks, Cruz. It's coming back, slowly but Shirley.

reply

PTSD is tough. I'm sure it's what keeps me alone.

reply

It's tough, but in the end we're tougher, right? 🙌

reply

I find a concerted effort produces results.
Carry on, soldier.

Have you tried the Japanese Light Novels? You have tons of them translated to English.

It's a very peculiar and successful type of novel you won't find out of Japan. It's like a short novel, but with a very light and funny mood, often published as a series with recurrent characters. They're very easy to read and incredibly addictive. And fun.

I usually have a 'normal' novel and a light novel in progress at the same time. Right now I'm re-reading Jane Austin novels, while reading 'The devil is a part timer' light novels series. I'm going for one or another depending I want to enjoy something deeper or I feel like disconnecting my brain for a while.

I HAVE READ THOUSANDS OF BOOKS IN MY LIFE.ALTHOUGH I HAVE TO ADMIT,I HAVE SLOWED WAY DOWN IN RECENT YEARS..MY DAUGHTER IS THE BIG READER IN OUR HOUSE NOW...SHE AVERAGES A BOOK A DAY.

reply

When I was about 11 I figured out that if I went in the room with all the books, I could go just about anywhere and never leave the house. My folks stopped putting me on restriction because I thought it was vacation.

reply

Do comic books count?

reply

Manga yes but regular comics no.

reply

Right now my reading kindle is my #1 most valuable item. I used to read a book every few days, now i'm up to 2 books a day.

reply

Yes! Love my kindle fire. Damn tough piece of tech, too. If only phones could take the same punishment.

reply

I read. A few months back I finished rereading Great Expectations. Now I am rereading the Bible. I reread a book about Star Wars original trilogy final and earlier drafts in between.

reply

Social drama, fantasy and scifi. Quite diverse genres.
