Can you name a person who was once in a band, but is better as a solo artist?

Other than Michael Jackson, I can't think of anyone whose solo career was more well received than when they were in a band/group.

Black Sabbath > Ozzy Osbourne

Cream > Eric Clapton

The Police > Sting

Creedence Clearwater Revival > John Fogerty

Genesis > Phil Collins

The Beatles > John Lennon/Paul McCartney/George Harrison/Ringo

Faces > Rod Stewart

Led Zeppelin > Robert Plant

The Velvet Underground > Lou Reed

The Stooges > Iggy Pop

Lionel Richie?

reply

Good one.

reply

Justin Timberlake? Although I did enjoy some N'Sync songs....

reply

It doesn't count if both the band they were in and going solo both suck.

reply

Robbie Williams > Take That ?

reply

That's a tough one.

reply

Madonna > The Breakfast Club
Cyndi Lauper > Blue Angel
Neil Young > Buffalo Springfield
George Michael > WHAM
Rod Stewart > Faces
Ricky Martin > Menudo
Belinda Carlisle > The Go Gos
Bjork > The Sugarcubes

reply

Whoa, whoa, whoa hold on there with Rod Stewart better than Faces.

reply

Fair call, even if Rod's solo career actually started at the same time as Faces and was equally well-received. Better is debatable.

reply

i think if you took the first few years of his solo output, it would probably hold up, maybe surpass the faces.

i don't know his career inside out, and i haven't listened to the faces in many years, but i think every picture tells a story holds up as the best thing he did by my reckoning.

Interesting fact i just read on wikipedia about the GoGos:

The Go-Go's rose to fame during the early 1980s and were the first, and to date only, all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts.

pretty sad really that no other girls have done that in 40 years.

Billy Idol.

Talking about Genesis. How about Peter Gabriel?

reply

Peter Gabriel could work. It's at least even with Genesis.

reply

Definitely Peter Gabriel. I loved him solo. Genesis, not so much.

reply

Joe Walsh > The James Gang

reply

NAILED IT.

reply

But .... Eagles > Joe Walsh

reply

Aren’t The Eagles Joe Walsh’s backing band (just kidding).

reply

Darius Rucker.
I simply don't care for Hootie and the Blowfish.

reply

I'm not down with country music. In the country world, is Hootie more loved than his solo stuff?

reply

Hootie were huge, I think.
Darius is 10x better.
