Do Americans ever say “French fries” anymore? Or just fries?

Like why do you have to say French?

I remember people were “boycotting” the term after France refused to join the “war on terror” aka illegal invasion of Iraq. Maybe people didn’t boycott, it was just a lightbulb moment, “why do we say French?”

reply

Fries, except when I jokingly say that I'm going to eat only French food -- French Toast, French Onion Soup & French Fries.

reply

Wow, good question.

If I'm ordering I'll say fries.
If I'm making them I'll say, I'm gonna make French Fries, anyone want some.

I know for a fact that they wanted to start calling them freedom fries.

reply

We Yanks use both terms.

😎

reply

I say both and most people do too

I never met anyone who called them 'Freedom Fries,' that was media and gov't BS

reply

Weren't a few Republican politicians doing because the French weren't going to support us with our invasion of Iraq or something? I remember that being a thing with some of them.

reply

Yeah, I seem to recall the Capitol Building cafeteria changing the name on the menu...what a bunch of silly nonsense that all was!

reply

And most now look back and see the 'war on terror' as completely phoney. They don't think it stopped anything, it just destabilised the middle east.

The war on terror was intelligence agencies preventing attacks, not armies invading countries.

reply

I doubt the 'Freedom Fries' thing had anything to do with it, one way or the other

reply

Because saying pommes de terre frites is too difficult, apparently.

reply

Pardon me, do you have any grey poupon?

reply

But of course!

reply

Yeah, i've never heard the term freedom fry used anywhere except on tv. They never stopped being french fries.

reply

I call them Satan’s Heart Darts since he obviously created them to cause people to die younger so he can get their souls sooner.

reply

Almost everybody I know says French Fries, just fries if they are in a hurry. There was a move a while where some places were calling them Freedom Fries but that went nowhere.
