What's the Best summer vacation you ever had?

I know you've all been on one ;). Got any good stories?

reply

I know this might sound weird, but the best summer vacation I had was when I made a road trip from my home in Minnesota to New England. It was a mission to deliver my mother's cremains to her family's plot in Salem, Massachusetts. My daughter went with me. Once the mission was complete, she and I took the opportunity to visit my cousins and see a few sights. We rented a convertible (my dream car) and actually had a nice time after the low-key ceremony at the cemetery. It was nice to reconnect with my cousins and we enjoyed seeing the Atlantic Ocean, the House of Seven Gables, and Niagara Falls. We endured some scary weather, but all in all, it was a nice experience. We fulfilled my mother's wish to be interred with her parents but still managed to have a nice time. It was sad, but good, too.

I'm glad you could get some enjoyment during what must have been a really difficult time but that goes with your personality... our wise and optimistic and sweet Glenny Girl (psst...that's why we love you;)

The New England region has so many fabulous sites and attractions...I love it up there and have been all over the map
The seafood, the history, the outdoor sports...New England is amazing

reply

I think having the burial behind me was a release after I'd spent the previous three years taking care of my ailing parents, mostly on my own. I agree, New England is amazing. I'd like to go back again someday. I'm a bit of a history buff and was fascinated to visit historic Revolutionary War sites such as Lexington and Concord MA. I was in awe to be standing in a spot where they took place.

All the respect in the world and in my heart to you for giving love and support to your folks in their final years
Lots of people run away from that serious life changing responsibility and I can't blame them, I can't imagine how rough it must have been...you did what needed to be done
You really are a spectacular person Glenny❤️
Love and Respect sweet Lady

New England is wonderful, I need to get back to Mass, Maine and Vermont, it's just wonderful up there in the summer

reply

Thanks, Shogie. It was a very difficult time, but I survived it. I also got stuck doing 90% of the work to clear out their home of 40+ years. I describe those years as being in a tunnel, just trying to get through each day, taking care of them, doing whatever needed to be done. There are times that I'm a bit resentful that my brothers weren't much help, and I sort of "lost" those years, but then again, I was happy to be there when my parents needed help. But I also learned a big lesson - that I don't want my kids to have to go through what I did when getting their house ready to sell, so I continually get rid of stuff so they don't have to deal with it.

Time to head back outside. More yard work is beckoning...

reply

Rake, rake like the wind sweetie!

I admire you for how on top of things you are...you are a magnificent and humble BOSS😘

reply

This is more than raking. This is spreading dirt around the yard to fill in the low spots. The dirt is from the patio I had installed a couple of weeks ago. I asked the patio guys to leave me a pile so I could do this. What makes it so tedious is I have to filter through it to remove the stones - a pain, but all it cost me is my labor. I'm thankful that we had some perfect weather today - temps in the 70s and a nice breeze to keep me from overheating. Time for some dinner now.

Enjoy😉

With my ex when we went to the Hamptons, Hawaii or Vegas. It's a tossup.

reply

I have great childhood memories of a couple of summer vacations spent in the Hamptons in the mid to late 1960s when a middle-class family could afford to rent a house for the summer. The Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton is still there.

Riding quarter horses, swimming in a beautiful lake that had a raft made of logs in the center, and barbecues at Rocky Ridge Dude Ranch in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York when I was 8 years old.

reply

I know you despise me and have me on 'ignore

Still...sounds like a fine time Kane👍

Not that you'll see this you cranky pants!

reply

A few years back we rented a house in Yosemite. It was a great week of hiking and stargazing, and we had the benefit of perfect weather throughout.

This sounds wonderful!

I posted on the Cruising thread about how I sailed to England from NYC on one of the last trips of the original Queen Elizabeth. I was 9 so it was incredible. We spent a little time in London, but we spent the most time in a rural town about 100 miles NW of London. Horse country. Learned how to ride (but as of today haven't been on a horse in 45 years). People talk about the "English Countryside" and I'll say it was so idyllic. I became something of an anglophile, which I sort of am to this day, but realizing that these are childhood memories and I've never been back. Just great memories.

reply

It wasn't really a vacation. I studied abroad during the summertime in my country, and winter in the country I went to. Came back six months later to enjoy winter in my country. Best summer ever!

road trip to florida, epcot center.

15 years ago this week my wife and I went on our honeymoon to the Riviera Maya section of Mexico
As soon as we got to the resort we started tipping heavily...we didn't see an empty glass or a soggy towel for the rest of the trip

The people were lovely and industrious, the wildlife was amazing (I saw a wild monkey and swam with a grouper fish the size of my Ford!) and the Mayan ruins at Tulum were awe inspiring...1,000
years before I saw it people were earning a living and raising families there...this realization amazed me, I don't know why...

The Yucatan is gorgeous and it's people couldn't be more gracious
I'm going back some day!

reply

I visited the Mayan ruins at Palenque, years ago when I was a teenager. By far the highlight of my family's Mexican trip that summer vacation. Just spectacular.

reply

I googled Palenque as I'd never heard of it
It's beautiful and the pictures I found are haunting...imagine all of those ancient people building a city and temples to their forgotten gods and building a society in a forest
Cool stuff
I'm never less than totally impressed by the achievements of the ones who came before us
Good stuff nyc!

reply

I'd never heard of it, either. You're right. It looks like an amazing place. I, too, am in awe of those who came before us.

reply

Me too!
The thing is I hate to be amazed by anyone and not visit them with my 'amazing' routine...I'm thinking Europe, they are going to love me😬

reply

What the heck is your "amazing routine?"

reply

I mostly make it up as I go along...it's pretty amazing though;)

reply

Oh, okay then. Create something amazing!

reply

I don't do well when ordered Love...I operate best alone😘

reply

Winging it works. You gotta be in the moment and then - voila! Inspiration strikes and boom! ⭐

reply

I come up with my best stuff in the wee hours when nobody is around;)

reply

Heh, heh, heh. I get it. I'm at my best when I'm a little silly. 🍺🍺🍺

reply

🍺you are never wrong girl😘

reply

Oh, yes I am, but thanks for the kind thought! ❤️️ 😘

reply

I'll take your word...I have never seen you step wrong yet Love❤️

You keep being you Glen...I like your neighborhood stories and I think you are the best person I ever met on the internet

reply

How kind of you to say so. 😘 Yes, I enjoy sharing about the characters in my neighborhood. We all have at least one, don't we?

reply

Funnily enough I'm probably the pain in the ass on the block ...My lovely neighbors all seem to find me unpleasant:/

Their loss😬

reply

You? Unpleasant? Nah. I can see you as a pain in the ass, though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Every neighborhood has to have at least one, don't they? 🤣 I definitely see Bozo as the PITA on my block.

reply

I just do my thing but thank you...I do adore you despite my poor reputation😘
