Is the pirate film genre officially extinct?

Are zombies and super heroes that much more interesting?

Not much interest in things with pirates from the general public anymore. I truly feel like that ship has sailed.

Is The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise officially dead ???

reply

Nice pun. There's talk about there being a reboot... Which might be bad form given it might be too soon to restart the franchise - even with its main star, Johnny Depp, being preoccupied with personal matters at the moment. Johnny really does carry the ship and the ship may go down with him.

If it was dead, then I wonder why Disney would publicize the fact that Johnny Depp was let go. It must have been in development. Maybe it's in jeopardy now since the Deadpool writers are no longer attached to the project, or it won't happen for a long time since POTC 5 and 6 were six years apart.

reply

I think there will be another one. They make money.

It's not that zombies and superheroes are not creative venues to express ideas (a lot of them are cookie-cutter or just easy to make), it's that pirates require much needed reinventing to get everyone excited about the rich prospects and unforeseen treasures that have yet to wash ashore, argh!

Every zombie movie is basically the same. It's not even a genre, it's a trope.

reply

It is dead-on-arrival.

hear hear!
well said.
I do like the odd zombie film , but its an idea thats been done to death.
Also its limiting the amount of post apocalyptic films that dont have zombies in!
TWD would be much better without the zombies :)

Building a sea-worthy pirate vessel is probably not in the budget for anyone but big studios either. Not to mention historical film sets, props, and costumes. Pirate tales are epic.

reply

Ah yes, a sea-worthy pirate vessel, indeed!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Arr! You can mock me ship while ya swim with the fishes! To the depths of Davey Jones' locker with ya!

reply

They can just CGI it all right.

I've never been into Pirates of the Carribean, but I'd love to see a fact based movie on real pirates. Perhaps a movie based off the book The Pirate Hunter: The True Story of Captain Kidd.

reply

Yes! Whenever big studios include real pirates from history they turn it into something completely fictional anyway. They don't think history would interest people. I'd watch a dramatized miniseries about Captain Kidd on BBC, The History Channel, or something like that.

reply

Ahoy matey, arrrg!* 💀

I wasn't into the Caribbean movies either, but would love to see one based on real pirates. I'd watch that a lot sooner than the 1000th zombie or superhero 😴

*Where did the pirate accent come from anyway?

reply

Because Hollywood obviously would not condone or promote piracy. Remember, piracy is a CRIME.

reply

Walk the plank, filthy landlubber!!!

reply

Yes!

I wonder if Disney will do a live action version of Treasure Planet. It might be more succesful than the animated version.

reply

Well, no. The HBO series Billions is doing quite well.

Or did you think that all pirates are sailing the seas on ships?

reply

Yeah, unless the pirate is a girl, then it is politically OK.

reply

well , there's been 4 seasons of "Black Sails" quite recently
