Black Panther best picture nomination

Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed this film and think it’s really good. But I don’t believe it is even the best film of its kind (superhero genre) that came out out in 2018. I don’t understand how Black Panther has received a best picture nomination over the film that is generally considered superior, Avengers Infinity War. I don’t think being ‘culturally significant’ warrants it being nominated. Especially when it has received no nominations for directing, actor, cinematography, writing, or editing.

reply

It won't win. The Academy is trying to look more relevant by nominating a superhero movie.

reply

And they can easily do that now that they have extended the number of possible nominations to 10.🙄

reply

They were suppose to have a 'Most Popular Movie' category this year but they walked it back. They don't seem to know how to deal with superhero movies.

reply

Ignoring them would be a good start. Sorry if you're on the MCU (or DC or whatever) bandwagon, I'm just Olde School so I don't take all these superhero movies very seriously. They're fun sometimes. I like X-men but I wouldn't give them any awards outside of effects and that sort of thing.

reply

Don't get me wrong, I am no fan of superhero movies but they make money for the studios.

reply

That category is also nonsense. If you truly think a superhero movie is excellent, then just nominate it. But don't try to include every movie just to try and please everyone.

reply

Why in the world would they bother with a Most Popular Movie category? Not hard to figure that one out. Most talked about + most $$ = boom !

reply

They are trying to resurrect their crumbling tv ratings. Perhaps if they focused less on politics and more on the awards, people would continue to watch them...

reply

Idk ... When things are effed up politically, people are going to be reacting to it. If we weren't having wars and depressions and racial enmity, maybe our popular culture would be a little more upbeat.
And just about everyone's tv ratings are crumbling, that whole landscape is changing rapidly.
I'm really not sure what the Oscars are about anyway. It all serves the movie industry. I enjoy seeing stars promote their movies and tv shows and music on talk shows, but I'm no fan of awards. They don't serve a purpose as far as I'm concerned.

reply

"They don't serve a purpose as far as I'm concerned."

Basically the same purpose as sports: Competitive entertainment.

reply

Best Picture itself needs to be relabeled Best Drama, and from there the category expansion is obvious.

reply

The Globes have drama and comedy categories. might not be a bad idea to expand the categories.

reply

With the Oscars already having Best Animated, and Best Documentary, I'm surprised they didn't further subdivide that category.

reply

Even the golden globes splitting of categories can be frustrating, like a few years back when The Martian was nominated as a comedy. Same this year with Green Book.

reply

I agree. Black Panther was good, an 8/10 for me, but not one of the best films of the year. I don't think it is better than First Reformed, Eighth Grade, Hereditary, A Quiet Place, Searching, or Avengers Infinity War.

reply

First Man got completely ignored.

reply

It got 4 nominations:

Production Design
Sound Editing
Sound Mixing
Visual Effects

reply

I stand corrected but do they really count ??

reply

It still counts, but I was expecting First Man to get a couple more.

reply

You really think the director and producer are happy with those noms ??

reply

They probably would have liked more.

reply

A fun movie but a weird choice
The capes always get ignored...maybe rightfully so though I do enjoy the MCU and some DC stuff

reply

Bloody good movie, but definitely won't win. Its a nod to the comic-book movie genre, which is nice, I guess those old fart AMPAS voters have realized their genre prejudice is making them look out of touch. And, you know, old.

BTW if you either want to laugh at other peoples idiocy or weep for humanity, have a look at the "Black Panther" board right now. Its jampacked by neckearded incel racist idiot fanboys who HATE BP and HATE that its succeeded where other comic book movies have failed. They're a sorry yet laughable spectacle.

reply

All this year people have been championing Black Panther. Telling us how it shows that fantasy/superhero films can achieve greatness instead of "divisiveness".

Most of the other movies mentioned here have had a far more divided response than BP had.

Seems a bit daft now, in the wake of the almost year long honeymoon, to imply that BP is receiving undue prominence with this nomination. Yes it's unusual that a superhero action film is getting this nomination. But so what?

I'm just surprised that the weirdos are so slow to use this to bash TLJ and Disney.

reply

I don't think it's wrong if a film's cultural significance is considered by the Academy. Cultural significance can be a key part of why a film works artistically.
