Childhood TV shows

What shows stick in your mind from your early childhood? I don't mean favorites necessarily, but just some you remember. Perhaps the earliest one you remember or some you watched when you were still fairly young, say under age 12.

Mine:
Mickey Mouse Club
Father Knows Best
Whirlybirds
Dick Van Dyke
Dobie Gillis
Lassie
My Three Sons
Bonanza
Gunsmoke
The Lawrence Welk Show

(Yep, I'm old.)

Dexter's Laboratory
Cubix

reply

'Scooby Doo, Where are You?'
An essential childhood classic!
Everybody would get away with everything if not for those meddling kids!!

'The Magic Garden'
I loved the music, the jokes and the chuckling flowerpatch!
Im not ashamed to admit that i have their vinyl album in excellent condition...though i should probably be ashamed😂

reply

Thundercats
Sponge Bob

reply

My kids LOVE Sponge Bob
I must say it has grown on me...great kiddie show

reply

My kids loved Scooby Doo. I've never heard of The Magic Garden, though.

reply

The Magic Garden was about two young, fairly attractive hippy girls that played guitar, sung songs, told corny jokes and talked to a squirrell and a flower patch every episode

You would swear they were completely stoned and little Shogie was convinced that they were REALLY into each other😉
Not that there's anything wrong with it;)

reply

That sounded so awesome I had to check it out on YouTube...
I really need to start doing drugs @_@

reply

It was a trippy show for sure
Damn i miss the 70's and 80's!

No filter then, no safety net, entertainment could be just plain weird and we loved it!

Do you remember the Star Wars Christmas Special...?
I think its on YouTube

Talk about needing drugs😂

reply

I totally missed it! Probably a good thing.
The 70s-80s wre awesome, way before tivo, on demand, youtube and even vcr... I have so many memories of "did I really just see that??"

reply

I was a regular Magic Garden viewer.

reply

Ive seen a few of yours but Bonanza is a standout for me
That show was an all time classic
Loved it

reply

Fury
Clutch Cargo
Wild Wild West
The Rat Patrol
Combat
The Time Tunnel
One Step Beyond

reply

I'd forgotten about Clutch Cargo! We watched that quite often.

The Millionaire
Leave it to Beaver
American Bandstand
Garrison's Guerrillas
Lancer
The Big Valley
The Rifleman
The Guns of Will Sonnet
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

reply

How could I forget Leave It to Beaver??

reply

I don't know why but black & white TV spoke to me when I was a kid and I would watch TVLand constantly. I watched I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Bewitched, etc. My mom always watched MASH so I can remember seeing some of their faces and not understanding the jokes at. all. Also Alfred Hitchcock but only at night and surrounded by blankets.

We watched Roseanne together though. Those are good memories.

reply

Yep, the b&w still settles me to this day. Though I'll tell you, wait, they colorized two Dick Van Dykes and put 'em up on the my cable listings a while back. They're absolutely gorgeous!

reply

I might have to catch a glimpse at one of those :)

reply

Land of the Giants
Dr. Welby, M.D.
Dragnet
That Girl
Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law
Cannon
The Mod Squad
Judd, for the Defense
Captain Kangaroo

reply

Omigosh, Captain Kangaroo. Yes! That reminds me of Romper Room - one of the earliest shows I remember.

reply

Absolutely, "Romper Room." She used to look into her mirror at the end of the show. They'd never play with the toys I wanted to play with. Those were never touched. They sat on the shelves in plain view while she'd take out some inane "learning toy."

reply

Pee Wee's Playhouse

reply

A kind hearted soul.

reply

Pee Wee was great
Loved his movies too

reply

"Pee Wee's Playhouse" remains just about the strangest kids show I've ever seen.

reply

It WAS strange!
But it had a fun adult sense of humor for a kiddie show

Guest stars included Laurence Fishburn, S Epatha Mekerson, Phil Hartman, Jimmy Smits, Steve James and many more!

This show was so good

reply

It was that rarity: a show aimed at children that adults could enjoy too. I binge watched it on Netflix a few months back and was surprised how well so much of it holds up. Mr. Reubens was a true visionary; it's a shame more children's shows aren't guided by artists of his caliber.

reply

I agree

Oddly enough, Sponge Bob is smarter than it has any need to be

Ive been stuck in the house with these little monsters of mine on a rainy day and have laughed my ass off watching Sponge Pants
Pretty solid cartoon!

reply

His Playhouse was a raunchy stand up comedy act before he did it as a kids show.

reply

Huh!
I need to look this up
I am a shameless lover of raunchy stuff😉

reply

Loved Pee Wee! My husband and I watched it with our son every Saturday morning. That was Must See TV! LOL!

reply

This was actually a show that deserved to be called "Must See TV." (I believe it was R_Kane who dubbed the majority of "Must See TV" as "Must Flee TV" -- a sentiment I strongly share.)

reply

I remember Paul Reubens’ first TV appearance after having been caught pleasuring himself in an adult movie theater. He looked at the studio audience, paused, then asked, “So, heard any good jokes lately?”

reply

LOL

reply

Wish I could remember the hostess's name for the end-of-show bit. Apparently, there was a different host for different markets.

reply

I remember the name Miss Plummer, a brown haired woman, but, that is interesting information about different markets.

reply

I think the hostess we saw was blonde, but then again, it was black & white TV so I could be wrong.

reply

We would call the Capt. Kangroo regular, Mr. Greenjeans Mr. Creamjeans.

reply

Can I say you're weird? I never thought of something like this. But hey, I'm a "goody-two-shoes," so whatever. 🙂

reply

You may. As Alice’s father told her in Tim Burton’s Alice In Wondeland, “All the best people are bonkers.”
