It's The Least Wooooondeful Time Of The Year

What was once a warm, loving, spiritual, selfless and giving season has degenerated into what is possibly the saddest and most discouraging time of the year, and I think that we need to stop denying it. What my religion calls Christmas once was a time of peace on earth, goodwill to humankind, and a time of O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magii," a short story where a truly loving wife and husband each sacrifice their most prized possession (she, her luxurious tresses, he, his pocket watch) to raise the money to give her/his beloved the perfect gift (combs for her hair, a watchdfob for his watch). I wish that this magic were still in the world, and I think that it can be, again; but not while we are in denial. The aspirations of Christmas exceed human grasp. We stress ourselves out to make everything perfect for our loved ones and ourselves, but humans are imperfect, and that is okay all year around, including Christmas. We need to give ourselves permission to be imperfect. We need to remind ourselves that those whom we love KNOW that we love them, because we let them know every day, not just the day that we give them the iPhone X or the World Cruise. We need to start feeling with our hearts and stop being driven by what the commercial world puts into our heads. We need to step out of the mindless, consuming stampede that retail creates at this time of year, and march to what Henry David Thoreau called "the beat of a different drummer." We need to take care of ourselves at this time of year, and truly love ourselves, and only then can we make those whom we love feel loved, and cared for, and, for those of us who have a God, only then can we make that God feel loved, and cared for.

Please stop the insanity of the season. Love yourself and everything, I promise you, will fall into place. Happy REAL Holidays!

You're right.

O. Henry, renowned for the surprise endings to his short stories, was a favorite author in my youth. Here's a great film which encapsulates the most famous, narrated by another great author, John Steinbeck: https://moviechat.org/tt0044981/O-Henrys-Full-House

"The Twilight Zone Marathon is all I look forward to. "

A kindred spirit! TZ marathon is like a belated Christmas gift.

reply

I binged it last Christmas

reply

I confess that I binge TZ every few months. Netflix has it, except for the hour long episodes.
I do have the Definitive DVD collection though.
The thing about the New Year's Eve Marathon is that it brings all of us fans together. We always got together on IMDb to chat while we watched. Hope we can do that again this year.
There aren't nearly as many of us, but I've noticed that this site has grown since the 4th of July marathon.

reply

you are certainly a big TZ fan - whats your favorite episode ??

reply

I have several.....
The Shelter
The After Hours
Eye of the Beholder
Living Doll
Obsolete Man
Time Enough At Last
Night Call
The Masks.....
Holy CRAP! there are more!
Some of the titles, I may have wrong.
I am definitely a fan. LOL!

reply

Never saw those series...is it good?

reply

The Twilight Zone?
Yes. It's a great show. Look it up and find out more about it.

reply

I only saw the outer limits...thank you.

reply

That's a good show. I prefer The Twilight Zone.
The board is in trending right now.

reply

I just check it...very good ratings on imdb and its from '59.It's been a while since i saw a "black and " production.

reply

Black and white adds to the feeling and mood of the episodes.

reply

It's going to look a bit weird on my tv screen...but i will bring the first season and watch it.

reply

I suppose that when you are use to movies and tv shows in color, black and white is a bit strange.
I'm older. Growing up, we had a black and white tv set. Most shows were filmed in black and white. We didn't have a color tv until the mid 1960's. Certain shows are just better in black and white. Twilight Zone is one of them.

reply

We also had black and white tv...it broke so many times...

reply

I like the episode where Bill Shatner sees the creature on the wing!

reply

"It Crawled Out of the Woodwork" and "Don't Open Till Doomsday" are as weird as anything "TZ" ever did. Plus, they're lensed by the great Conrad Hall, who gives "OL" a noir look that hasn't been duplicated since.

reply

It's rare nowadays to see a TV show in black and white on a channel other than MeTV. Watching Syfy's "TZ" Marathon -- with commercials in color, a reminder of how eschewed the black and white format otherwise is on Syfy -- only adds to the otherworldly charms of "TZ." I hope when Jordan Peele bring back "TZ" he has the guts to preserve the original series' black and white format -- a format, frankly, as essential to the original series' identity as Serling himself.

reply

I agree. I think that's where the 1980's version lost much of the charm among other reasons....
Even Twilight Zone,The Movie! It's a shame that it wasn't filmed in black and white. They missed the mark.

reply

It's very good. It's one of the best series ever.

๐Ÿ˜Ž

reply

I will bring it and watch it...you make me curious about it.

reply

Oh yeah!
TZ marathon!!!

reply

I love TZ!

reply

"Please stop the insanity of the season. Love yourself and everything, I promise you, will fall into place."

AMEN!

reply

Have you ever noticed that the most ubiquitous expression post, " the season of giving" is, " what did you get ? "

It's reminiscent of the lyrics from The Secret of Christmas :

It's not the things you do at Christmastime
But the Christmas things you do all year through

reply

And another "amen."

reply

I wanna a doll for Christmas, and not the kind you blow up.

reply

You said that you're married...why do you want a...doll?๐Ÿค”

reply

I'll give you 2 guesses

reply

If it is what i'm thinking right now...i think i understand...

reply

It's not what you THINK you know, it's What you think you know.

reply

Christmas in this commercialized age can be very depressing for anyone who doesn't make a whole lot of money to splash around. It can also be depressing if a person has no particularly close friends and/or no family to share even the more real values with.

If a person is in BOTH those situations it's very depressing indeed! No money and no family means it's just another day, but with the added burden of not being able to avoid all the reminders of great food, fabulous gifts and family gatherings.

reply

Tell me about it...with what i gain,i barely buy the usual things for the "christmas" and new years eve...buy this buy that...oh that's beautiful, let's buy this too....

reply

Yep, it's not a fun time if you can't afford things.
I hope both of us manage to have improved fortunes one day :)

reply

Maybe,in my case when i'll win at the lottery.Lol
