What's your favorite Thanksgiving side dish?

For me, it's a toss up between the green bean casserole and the yams with the marshmallows on top. Yummy!!! :)

Stuffing made with sausage

Mashed redskin potatoes with mushroom and chestnut gravy

Candied butternut squash with little marshmellows on top

And a crisply-roasted goose, because turkey is so boring

Perfect side menu!
Thanks as always R_Kane

Salient post...
I like the cranberries to be actual cranberries...the jellied/canned ones are good but nothing beats the fresh stuff

reply

Butternut squash cappuccino soup with a white truffle oil twirl.

Cauliflower, broccoli and cheese.

Stuffing, lots of different types of stuffing.

Gravy!

Usually everything else is too sweet for me. I like the tradition but not the food so much.

reply

That soup sounds good

reply

It's delicious and really easy to make too.

Try it with your leftovers this year and perhaps plate it up once you're confident with it for next Thanksgiving.

Great way to start the meal as it's not quite dinner and those hungry can snack whilst those running late are holding up the carving. You can serve it in cups/mugs too and so no table real estate need be taken up.

Thx Reality
Im only hosting a few in-laws this year (thank God!)
Thx for the tip!

reply

Don't be too good at it, they'll have you doing it every year and there'll be more and more of them coming if you do it too well 😜

Family...
Oh crap...been there!
I just recently broke ties with almost everybody lol
But ill be sure to screw up your excellent recipe just to get rid of the rest of them:)

reply

Sometimes some time away from family is a healthy thing, enjoy the good times and don't dote on whatever ills have made the current broken ties happen.

Most of all; get drunk and fight about football. That's what it's all about 😉

reply

Thank you

reply

@ reality, where were you when I needed you, you are so right, one year I made a really great Italian soup, now every year they all insist that I make it, (all 27 of them) and it's not easy, I should put cabbage in it and make it taste really awful..... naaa, I can't do that, guess I'm stuck making it.

reply

I do like a nice Italian soup myself.

I'd ask what you'd put in it but we all know that there'd be a 28th guest this year to find out how good it is in person Yawkee 😉

reply

you're welcome anytime

As a brother who grew up in a Jewish - Italian neighborhood, I learned that Italian Wedding soup MUST be made with Escarole ( or as they pronounced it: aschadall). I make it for our New Years Eve dinner as an appetizer and some people just stuff themselves silly with it and Italian bread that they can't even eat their NY Strip steak..

reply

What I make is not even close to Italian wedding soup, it's called Rabe soup made with ground Italian sausage (hot or sweet) sautéed in olive oil and butter, (the butter cuts the Rabe's bitterness) add chicken stock, "Broccoli rabe" and cannellini beans, (optional) topped with Romano Cheese.
BTW, "Broccoli Rabe" has nothing to do with Broccoli.

reply

Soup, especially homemade soup, is a sadly under appreciated food. Yum, with New England oyster crackers, or with crusty bread.

reply

Quite true!
Unseasoned croutons will do in a pinch as well

It's a three way tie between mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Mmmmmmmmmm.
