Food and Snacks suggestions for a trip

Ksp suggested pretzels, as well as carrot and cheese sticks as snacks for a long road trip. For those of you who like pretzels, they also have the benefit of decreasing nausea, if you're prone to it, as well as being a tasty snack, if you like them.

Soon I'm about to embark on a 2400 mile trip -- my first long journey. Last weekend I found a 38 quart cooler and bought it. Phew, luckily I was looking right before summer's last hurrah here in the states.

Ok so good, I have a cooler, which is supposed to preserve food for 3 days. It's supposed to take me 4 days each way. Fine.

I pretty much have my dog's food worked out, but not my own.

I could grill some chicken before leaving, because it's good cold. Some bottled beverages are important and easily obtained. What else is good cold and could keep in a cooler?

Aside from cheese and carrot or celery sticks, anything else?

Or, better, things that would be good snacks or meals on a trip that don't require being kept cold, since I only have so much room in the cooler?

Obviously a lot of this comes down to individual tastes. Some may be wild about pretzels, yet hate cheese or celery, or whatever.

I'm thinking some kind of pasta salad may be a good idea to make ahead of time and bring with.

Any thoughts about any of this? I meant to make this post middle of last week, before the US holiday, so it'd be helpful to others (hopefully) but wasn't able to make it in time.

I like Combos for a snack. (Small pretzel pieces filled with cheese.) I also like to get a plastic cup with a straw so I can take sips while driving without having to fiddle with bottle caps.

Hope you have a great trip. Safe travels.

reply

Never heard of combos, but I can see how they'd be very easy to take along on a trip. Great idea to get a plastic cup with a straw! Maybe even one of those kid's "sippy cups" would work.

Thanks for the well wishes :)

reply

Apples, nuts, craisins.
You can make sandwiches or maybe some sandwich wraps with that grilled chicken.
Hard boiled eggs
Hummus
If you like tuna they have those individual packs.

reply

Sandwich wraps, yes, I could do that. I have some flour tortillas now, and could make up some of your famous cilantro/lime slaw to put in them. Hard boiled eggs are also a good idea.

Thanks!

reply

We always take Clif bars.

reply

No clue what Clif bars are, but I'll look for them. Thanks!

reply

They're like granola bars, only good.

Hi Cat,

I snack while driving so everything has to be at the ready. The cheese sticks are stripped of their wrapper and placed in a zippy bag. Same goes for apples cut in quarters. If you like hard cooked eggs peel, cut in half and put in a small plastic container. Same with sandwiches, but cut in fourths. All of these items go into a personal lunch bag with a frozen cool pack then placed on the seat next to me. I like everything to be one or two bites. I also like chocolate nuggets with almonds for energy. If you do like bagged snacks think of the least messy ones. Open before then secure with a clip. Be sure to have a trash bag available, like a Walmart bag. As I wrote before I like the very thin pretzel sticks. Easy to snack on. All of my snacks are in a small stand up bag or small tote sitting on the seat. As far as bottled water open then close before. It's quite a trick to hold the steering wheel while opening the bottle. Music is a must. I Bluetooth my phone to my truck or my CD's are in a stack easily reachable. Those small Oscar Meyer Lunchables are handy. Fruit cups are good to take along with plastic spoons & forks. I don't heavy eat while traveling. I want my tummy to be as calm as possible.

Paper towels are a must as well as those toilet seat liners. Look in the camping section at Walmart. I definitely realized I needed the liners after one of my biannual trips to FL. I came prancing out of the rest area ladies room, got into my truck and tootled on down the road. At the next rest stop I noticed tissue on my seat when I got out. Say what? Then it dawned on me! I felt my back waste band. OMGosh! Some of the tissue was still in place. I had pranced out of the previous place with a paper tail!

Don't forget to take your personal pillow, comfort throw, flip flops for the motel. My feet do not touch the floor of any motel/hotel floor & bath. The first thing I do when first entering the motel/hotel room...off goes the bedspread onto the floor! Eww!

I was thinking the same thing about having snacks in the cooler needing to be at the ready whilst driving. First cooler I looked at would have required pulling over just to open it! Eh, no, won't. The one I got is much easier to open.

I'll probably buy a few bricks or wedges of cheese, then cut them up and put in a zip bag. Good idea to put hard boiled eggs in a small plastic container, and halved. I'm thinking deviled eggs, which I like, and this cooler is supposed to keep things cool for 3 days.

Excellent idea to cut sandwiches into quarters, and I wouldn't have thought of that. I'm going to be driving through, as much as I can, except for stops for my dog and me to stretch our legs and for her to relieve herself. One or two bite's worth, I'll be sure to keep that in mind for some of them.

Trash bag, good idea. Hadn't thought of that.

I bought 3 gallons of bottled water for my dog, but hadn't thought of bringing a small one for me to drink out of. Good idea. I'm always drinking something -- water, iced tea, lemonade. Have a few empties from my favourite lemonade, and just realised I could rescue them from the recycling, and fill with my favourite iced tea, which I was thinking I'd have to do without because the jugs are too big.

The only thing I don't have worked out is music. I'm picking up the car today, so maybe I'll be able to figure something out, but all I've got is my iPad for that.

I'm LOLing at your toilet paper mishap :D

4 personal pillows (hey, I like lots of pillows, and I like my *own*, thanks) are on the list, along with flip flops.

I was bemoaning not having a laptop to bring, just the little iPad mini, when it occurred to me today I could bring my desktop with me! Why not? It's small, won't need a printer, just it, keyboard (also small), monitor and cables. A bit of a pain to repeatedly set up and break down, but not *that* bad.

Thanks much for your many suggestions!

Does your Ipad have bluetooth?

reply

Yes, but I'm clueless on how to use it, or what it even does. Just looked under Bluetooth on my desktop, and it found the iPad. Ok, great. Now what?

reply

Most of the newer cars have stereos with bluetooth.
You just have sync them so they "find" each other.
You could also get a cheap bluetooth speaker.
The stereo probably has aux slot too. You would need a cord to from
your headphone jack in your ipad to the stereo.

reply

I'm leaving Thursday! Too late to get a bluetooth speaker.

I'll bring the iPad in and see if the nice young guy can figure this out, tell me whatever I need and where to get it, plus how to use it. It really would be great to be able to load up the music I like and listen to it whenever.

reply

Ok, so it's some kind of wireless file transferring thing. The iPad shows up, but when I select a file to transfer to it from my desktop, it tried, and then I get a "There was an error connecting to the device" message.

reply

Seeing how this apple there might be something else you need.
I use Copy Trans to movie my music from my laptop to my Ipod.
I believe it's free.

reply

Huzzah, got the car and it's pre-iPad-ready! Has an app for it, so all I have to do is plug in the USB cord and it automatically starts up. Now to load it up with my favourite music.

reply

Sweetness. Do you have Itunes or have you loaded music from your computer before ?

reply

Yep, have iTunes and have uploaded music from computer to iPad before, but it was quite a while ago.

I'm thinking this is a great time for a Steely Dan Becker/Fagan themed road trip, with accents of other favourites.

P.S. I have to add the music system in this Nissen Sentra rocks!

reply

I despise Itunes. I found a way to bypass it.

Great call. You will have a lot of time for a lot of music.
A lot of window time.

Be careful you may have found your next car.

reply

I don't like iTunes either (too clunky), but since I know how to use it, I'll use it. I'm on new technology overload as it is.

I've even got some books on "tape" in there, which I'd forgotten about. Who knows, might be nice to listen to some. Definitely looking forward to the Steely Dan marathon.

Funny thing is, they didn't have any car that fit the bill when I got there. Then someone drove in early returning the Nissen. I'd been vaguely considering buying one, so what great timing that she returned it when she did, that I was able to take it early for the same price as if I hadn't, and, what a perfect opportunity to give it a real try to see how I like it.

reply

Sounds like you're getting there.
If I don't talk to you have a great time and be safe !!

reply

Love Audio Books! I always listen to them on long road trips. Of course, I'm usually not driving and I tend to be lulled to sleep with someone else reading....
Maybe a bad idea.

reply

I tried an audio book while driving...not a good idea for me. I found myself concentrating more on the book than the driving. I'm getting....sleepy....

At least with music you can tap the steering wheel or the dashboard. Jump around in your seat, sing to the high heavens...in other words look like that fool who had a paper tail hanging from the ladies room!

reply

Cat,
Safe travel in your new vehicle. Which one? 🛵 or 🛴😉
Have a great new experience & God Speed!

BTW, I sure hope your trip isn't to Florida!:)

reply

desktops don't usually get wifi though, so unless your hotel has hard wired ethernet jacks and you bring a cable, how will you internet?

reply

Mine does. In fact it's the only way I've ever connected with it. You probably haven't had one for a long time.

reply

You are going to have so much on your plate besides loading and unloading, I wouldn't deal with a desktop. Too much of a hassle. Our little mini Ipads can do wonders on a trip. GPS, wi-fi movies, of course your music, just don't forget your charger. Write down your list today of what to take. Cross off as you load. I use the soft side personal lunch coolers...easy to open and close. I'm glad someone mentioned wipes as I had forgot to mention. Can't do without them. Wraps would be sort of messy eating while driving. Good for the respite at the overnight. Just thought of something...a small spray bottle of disinfect to spray motel/hotel toilets.

reply

I hate trying to write anything on the iPad. It's good for watching/streaming movies, or listening to music (with headphones), and that's about it. (Must remember to pack headphones, too. Will be staying with a friend and his wife a few days, and don't want to disturb them with my pre-bedtime movie-watching.)

My Mac mini is only about 9x9x2" and the keyboard is very compact. It's only the monitor that's of any substantial size.

Very pleased I've gotten the car rental, so can pack up the things I won't be needing until I'm on the road. Yes, I've got a LONG list of things to pack, and all rechargers is on it. Good idea to cross off things on list *only* after they've been loaded.

I'd love to have had a soft cooler, but am going to have to bring too much in it for that to work. True, wraps would be messy, especially with slaw in them. Could do something like a turkey an avocado wrap, which would be easy to eat. Got some containers, love your idea of cutting sandwiches into quarters, and even with them i'll have to be careful to not make them with stuff that'll easily fall out while eating.

reply

If you are prone to headaches/migraines have your med easily accessible. I was referring to a soft zip open lunch bag cooler for your eats or snacks while driving, not the main one. Did you find a GPS device witnin your budget? BTW, where are you traveling from going to where? A 2400 mile trip is long and worse by yourself. Stop every 2 hrs., fill up on the half, keep your doors locked, but with "Fido" you do have a crime deterrent!:) All I have is the Mini Pug 22 magnum.

reply

Potential meds -- both for me and the pup -- are on the list. Found out she's allergic to bee stings, so definitely Benadryl goes along with it. (Poor thing, her face swelled up, she was itching like crazy, and generally driven mad until the Benadryl kicked in. Thank god I had some on hand.)

I do have a zippered insulated bag I could use that would more or less do as a lunch bag.

A guy at the car rental installed what he think is the best GPS app for my phone, and gave me a holder for it. The screen on the Garmin they had was about the size of my cell, so forget it.

I'm looking forward to this! I think it'll be an exciting adventure, and best of all the pup is my co-pilot. I plan to stop about every 2-3 hours -- restroom breaks for both of us, a chance to stretch our legs and look around wherever we are at the moment. She's a good watch dog, and big enough that only a fool would try to mess with me or with her.

So glad to have the car all sorted out, and a chance to get to know it before taking off. I couldn't figure out how to start it! Geez. Turned out you have to put your foot on the brake before starts. Who knew? I'd have never guessed that. Want to go over everything -- where the windshield wipers are, how to turn them on, the high beams, all of it.

reply

Granola bars. And always bring along wetties.

reply

Wet wipes are also a good idea, and I wouldn't have thought of them. Have paper towels on my list, but they're not as effective for sticky or greasy fingers.

Thank you!

reply

No problem. I also use those things when I spill drink or food. I tend to do that a lot...

reply

Now I'm thinking a towel for my lap would be a good idea, too. Just in case.

reply

Yeah, probably. My family always tells me I should just walk around with a napkin around my neck!

reply

Trail mix
Dried fruit
Dried apples, cherries, cranberries, goji berries, blueberries, strawberries, apricots, raisins, banana chips, figs, pineapple chunks, mango, and dates.
Unsalted nuts
Almonds, pistachios, cashews, peanuts, and walnuts. Higher-calorie macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, and pine nuts
dark chocolate chips
granola
Chex mix

reply

All good suggestions. I'm planning on buying some fresh fruit that keeps relatively well, too -- plums, figs, grapes.

Thanks!

reply

I always make sure to bring beef jerky, it's super handy and doesn't go bad. I also second the Clif Bars recommendation, they're great and have a ton of flavors.

Don't forget extra cigarettes and lighters ;)

reply

Thanks, Frog. Jerky is a good idea. Got another store run to make this evening, and will pick some up.

Had to laugh at Kazak's "They're like granola bars, only good." Never been a fan of granola bars either, but will pick one or two Clif bars up, in case I like them.

[deleted]

OK, I'll bite...what are Scotch eggs? I could look them up, but would rather hear it from a Brit.

reply

[deleted]

I'll take your word for it! I can imagine the cholesterol skyrockets! Am I correct when I say you Brits do love your sausages?:)

reply

[deleted]

Or some nice haggis! Had to look up Scotch eggs and, uh, I'm going to pass ;). Also never could quite develop a taste for marmite, or vegimite.

But I would be down for the salt and vinegar crisps, sausage rolls, mini Babybel, and orange squash. Regrettably, I'm unfamiliar with Mr Kipling's delightful cakes.

Good advice on staying hydrated. Never usually a problem with me because I've always got a beverage at hand. Not quite as easy to manage in a vehicle, but I've been given some excellent tips on that score too.

Thanks! I'm getting excited, and very relieved I've now got the car! I'll have a few days to get used to it, and the GPS app on my phone. So far, I haven't been able to figure out how to open the trunk (that's boot, to you ;)

reply

Cat, try finding a GPS app for the mini Ipad. You don't want to be fumbling with a small screen phone app. If I had known I would have shipped you my extra older Garmin.:) There's no way on earth I would take off on an unfamiliar 2400 mile trip w/o a GPS. So much info on them to assist the driver.
