Robert De Niro: The US was once 'inspiring' but now has turned into 'a tragic dumba-- comedy'

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Robert De Niro says that "in movie terms," the country was once "an inspiring uplifting drama" but now has turned into "a tragic dumbass comedy." The two-time, Oscar-winning actor spoke to Brown University graduates Sunday at ... read full story on Business Insider

De Niro should move to a country more to his liking, like Afghanistan.

A bit of a provincial attitude, Guitar Kimg. As far as I can see, this isn't the usual "left" Hollywood anti-Trump diatribe but focuses on the state of American film these days. To call the current US film industry "a tragic dumbass comedy" is an attitude many of us would share who believe that over the past decade or so we have seen some of the worst films of our lifetimes.

And why would a highly paid actor want to move to Afghanistan? To hobnob with the Taliban? Be on the receiving end of American imperialism's "Mother Of All Bombs"?

Some of your comments have shown intelligence, Guitar King. This, however, is not among them.

reply

He makes no mention of the state of movies, it's our entire country he is criticizing like the jackass he is.

reply

You are actually correct. I re-read the brief article and it does mention the state of the country as opposed merely to movies. Still, "in movie terms", I think it is plainly apparent that current American film and the state of the country are indeed "a tragic dumbass comedy". I suppose that's what happens to empires when they are reaching the point of their decline. This is not, contrary to what Democrats might tell you, due to Trump. Trump--boorish, vulgar, stupid, phony,--is symptomatic of a larger breakdown in American culture.

Our country was built on the principle of freedom of speech... when you get the point where you should blindly follow the leaders then we might as well join back with England and have a king again. I love this country but one of the reasons people attack us is because we've been bombing them and selling weapons to both sides often for economic motives. I don't excuse any terrorism... but if we stopped bombing these primitive nations and invested in healthcare and education instead we'd have a better country and a safer world. If you saw John Cena or the Rock beating a child... would you assume the child was evil? or that maybe the adult was in the wrong? This is how absurd it looks when you see a nation of our power beating the shit out of these weakling nations.

reply

I kind of agree with you. I think it is in bad taste to criticize your own country and its president no matter how much you dislike certain things about either.

Oh shut up.

Economically, the U.S. is as uncivil financially as Afghanistan is uncivil socially.

You could say that the U.S. is better in ways; however, our business structure is really third world.

reply

Lol. DeNiro trying to be president along with The Rock and Kanye West.

Look who's talking! Your latest movies are real gems like Dirty Grandpa, The Intern, Grudge Match, Killing Season, New Year's Eye... yeah, right.

Those are exactly that, tragic dumbass comedies!

reply

Exactly! He did some amazing movies in the 70s, and he could have taken a small pay cut to do a great low budget movie like many other great actors did.

reply

@action & Mort...
AMEN!!!!

reply

Cool, he's finally recognised his latest films for what they are.

reply

Ikr!

Here here....

Yeah, I can walk around my office and get all of their various opinions too. Everybody's got one. The bubble living Hollywood guy whom I've never met nor never will meet has an opinion. It means nothing to me.

De Niro is a Hollywood idiot. He should move to Cuba or Russia, and then complain about the USA.

😎

reply

Better yet, let him move to Russia then complain about Russia!

reply

Amen, Bro! He'll discover that's a whole different kettle of fish, cause he's likely to end up in Siberia.
