Ignoring trolls...

While it's a certain source of amusement to watch a certain troll with 8 million socks get desperate and start whining every few days, and while it can be even more amusing to keep responding to their BS, we should all simply ignore all the nonsensical gripe posts, and just let them peter out.

reply

You seem to only pop up when Ben misbehaves lol.

reply

Which is often. It's admittedly hard not to...so damn funny as he gets more and more desperate and starts grasping at every straw possible...and STILL fails.

reply

Just keep on hitting the ignore, just like you're advising. 😊

reply

I never advise bennie to hit ignore. He threatens to, and I say good. I advise him to find a new board to cry on.

reply

I'm talking about this post here that we're both replying to. You're advising us to ignore. I'm saying, just ignore.... πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

reply

I agree.

reply

You're right, except for one problem: that's how they're advising people on tMDb forum to handle it and all that's happened is the site has become overrun.

Any new person coming to the site, or anyone who's left for a while and come back, will see the site's become overrun, and leave. We've already lost several excellent, legit posters here for this reason.

reply

I'm still hereπŸ˜ƒ

reply

Yay! :D

reply

Anything new going on?

reply

Movie/TV-wise, I'm having a hell of a time finding something I want to watch on Netflix.

Personal life-wise, everything's pretty much in a state of chaos.

How about you?

reply

I'm catching up on some Netflix movies and working hard. What are you in the mood for,Netflix wise?

reply

Sounds good, a balance of working and being able to kick back and catch up on some movies :)

I'm thinking I'm in the mood for something light, maybe a comedy, or something with some comedy in it. Have any suggestions?

reply

Legit posters need to learn to not be so weak. It is really not our problem if they do not want to be here because of trolls showing up. The best thing we can do is continue being legit, let the moderators do what they need to, and allow Jim to keep progressing this website. It's not hard to ignore trolls or even hit the "ignore" button. If posters cannot do that, they are just as bad as the trolls.

reply

I agree Cat. That's why I've been staying away.

reply

Sorry to hear that, Bwb. You've been missed!

reply

Thank you Cat. Been to the cemetery today. Both of my parents where WW2 Vets. I've been watching Ray Donovan. What's new Cat ?

reply

I agree. If you think someone is a troll then don't whine about it. Just put them on ignore. The trick is, identifying what is trollish behavior to begin with.

reply

I've been trying not to ignore too many just so I can monitor some of the trolls but I had to ignore another today.

The troll (and it does seem to be mostly one person with multiple accounts) is very clever because he starts out very friendly and normal... and then only after he gains trust does he start to go ballistic on people. He also seems to be posing as female a lot too. If someone follows this pattern... please don't get discouraged... just calmly press ignore and carry on. He tries to make it look like your fault not his and for people not used to this game it can be very upsetting. Take care though not to ignore regular posters as you can't reverse the ignore.

reply

My strategy has been the same as yours, for the same reason. Jim really does need to fix the ignore feature so we're able to see which usernames we've put on ignore, and remove them if it turns out we hit the ignore button prematurely. Or to monitor.

Yes, I've noticed the same thing as you regarding the main troll, as well as other tell-tale signs, which I won't divulge, since there's no point in giving him tips.

reply

The guy seems experienced... so I'm not sure we can give him tips... but I wonder what makes him want to pick on such a tiny forum. Agree about reversing the ignores... hope we get that soon.

reply

He's been banned from most other forums...he's desperate because without trolling he has no life.

reply

I'd avoid saying anything that remotely could be construed as ad hominem because that will only fuel his fire... Just be polite and hope he gets tired or finds somewhere better. I've seen trolls go on for years. But that being said... appreciate your efforts though.

reply

He is an experienced troll. Although I'd never heard of or seen him on IMDb, he's been trolling -- and doxxing -- there for several years. However, I've now seen enough of his posts to realise he really is a sociopath, and as such, doesn't have access to normal human emotions and awareness, which is his weakness. So yes, he can be given tips as to how to better disguise himself, and I'm not about to do that.

He's on all the alternative IMDb sites, as best I can figure, so it's not like he's just picking on MC. He liked it here at first because there were no formal rules, so he thought he could carry on the same way he had been on IMDb.

I hope Jim has it high on his radar to fix the ignore feature.

reply

To whom are you referring?

reply

Why are you monitoring trolls? Are you a moderator?

reply

Same reason a regular student would keep an eye out for bullies at a school without enough monitors.

reply

Except that it isn't your job. It makes you look like a bully. You become what you're fighting.

reply

Then ignore me... problem solved.

reply

Why would I ignore you? Why would you ask someone to ignore you? So odd. You are creepy.

reply

/ignore ...see ya.

This is like Twin Peaks where a new BOB keeps popping up every few days.

reply

Well that's a relief. I don't need someone with an aggressive hostile attitude making beef with me all because I was trying to reason with him.

reply

Seems you're overly sensitive and will label anyone a troll just because they disagree with you. The guy was having a conversation, or trying to, and instead of engaging and making your argument in a reasoned manner you simply shut him down.

Living in an echo chamber can be hazardous to your world view.

reply

Actually, Sentient Meat is quite a level-headed poster. You may not know this because you haven't been around this MC board to read many of his posts, but I have.

If Barclays is a legit poster, and he may well be, it was unfortunate timing to begin posting in the middle of another troll infestation, with most of his posts being on the topic of trolling.

Sentient was responding to that situation, and didn't want to further engage with someone he suspected of being yet another sock of a troll.

Probably all just an unfortunate coincidence, and Barclay is in reality fine.

reply

Far too sensitive. The ignore button is there, it's a simple click. You click the button and you move on. Attacking people you "suspect" is just silly. Why even bother discussing it if you can't be bothered with other people's opinions? Timing or not, being civil is hardly a tough ask. Acting superior to others is hardly going to invite a better class of contributor. If anything it's going to bring more trolling.

reply

"Far too sensitive" in your opinion, not mine. You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

Sorry, I didn't see any attack or lack of civility, or superiority. If you did and do, again, you are entitled to your opinion.

Barclay apparently put me on ignore, when all I did was ask two simple, civil, questions of him for clarification. No hostility, no rudeness or harassment.

To me that is being far too sensitive, although I can understand it to a point after the previous poster's response, and being new to the site -- if that is in fact the case.

Ironically, Barclay put me on ignore simply for asking two questions, despite having objecting to others' responses after him questioning them. It's a two-way street. Either you're okay with people questioning you and being questioned, or you're not.

reply

Yes, in my opinion he is far too sensitive. Having his "authority" questioned.

As for him putting you on ignore I can only assume it's because you lot seem like a group. Seems logical to ignore all of you if you are doing the same thing.

And yes, he was attacked. He was accused of being someone else(later in the conversation) and then reported. Paranoia has gotten to some people it seems.

Anyway, I gave my two cents. If you disagree, you disagree. No skin off my nose. You have yourself a pleasant day.

reply

You fell right into it didn't ya lol? πŸ˜‚

reply

Nice try, bennie. Didn't work.

reply

Oh trying to reason with that guy? Yeah I see that it didn't work. Oh well. His loss. Not mine. In fact I am kind of happy that he put me on ignore. He seemed like he had anger issues.

reply

Nope, didn't work again, bennie. You're so obvious it's laughable. Oh...and reported

reply

Reported for what? I didn't do anything. And my username is Barclays, not bennie.

Is this how you treat all newcomers here? When I say you, I mean you personally. Not anyone else because I don't think anyone else is as rude as you and that other guy who tries to police the site even though it isn't his job.

reply

Bull, bennie. Barclays is just another sock. Yeah, we're rude here. If I were you I'd find another site to troll on.

reply

I've had enough of this crazy stuff. I've only just started posting and now I'm having to ignore people within the first hour.
Whoever this Bennie is, I think that you should ignore him. Just like I am about to place you on ignore.

reply

Whatever you want, bennie. Everyone knows it's you, troll. Try, just once in your life, telling the truth.

reply

Why is it that out of all of the posts you've made, which seem to have only begun today, the vast majority of them are about trolling?

Why, if you're brand new to this site, would you zero in on this subject?

reply

Because this is the first board I went to and those are the popular threads.

You people are rude. You talk about welcoming newcomers and then immediately harass newcomers especially if they question you.

I guess I will place you on ignore since I refuse to spend all my time on this site bickering with rude hostile people.
I would suggest anyone else reading this to follow my lead.

reply

Lying again, little bennie. None of your socks are gonna work. Reported again.

reply

Who are you talking about?

reply

I've placed you on ignore. Stop replying to me.

reply

OK. Buh-bye, little bennie troll

reply

I kind of think starting whole new threads about a troll feeds them more than just replying to their thread.
Like, replying to the troll's thread with a genuine straightforward reply is a single potato chip, and starting a thread ABOUT the troll is a whole bag of chips.
So you are basically playing right into their hands. All attention is feeding them, but you just fed them a whole meal.

reply

Yup, they know. But just like trolls, they can't help themselves. πŸ˜‡

reply

I have all wannabe Bens on ignore.

reply

I agree. It is boring and juvenile. This area should be filled with interesting, intellectually stimulating topics to respond to.
