Do You Still Visit IMDb?

I know a lot of folks were pretty pissed at IMDb after they shut down the message boards and vowed never to go back or to buy anything from Amazon ever again forever haha. After MovieChat emerged as a replacement for the IMDb forums I haven't really been back that much. This site has basic cast and rating info which is all I really care about. Sometimes I'll visit to look at the Trivia section, but that's kinda rare. Amazon on the other hand I visit every day. I'm a stay at home girl so most of my shopping is online nowadays and there's really no alternative to Amazon...

So do you still visit IMDb? What about Amazon? Why?

reply

Only about once a month to rate movies. I used to visit daily, but not anymore.

It's hard not to be tempted, I have a handful of times but am trying not to. The trouble with trying to stick to a boycott is that they have a comprehensive history for EVERYTHING!

I have completely abandoned Amazon ,though, fuuk Jeff Bezos!

reply

I still visit IMDb, but not as often. I uninstalled the Android app off my phone a couple of days after they closed the boards. For the few times I need to check IMDb I can always use the website directly.

I don't visit Amazon too, but that has nothing to do with IMDb for me. I only use online shop mostly for electronics but they are better at more specialized stores like B&H for cameras and other photography equipments, Newegg for computer stuffs, IKEA for home improvements, and small hobby sites or forums for Hot Wheels collections, LEGO and action figures (they are better curated and organized, unlike an everything-store that is Amazon), etc.

reply

Yes, but not very often. I just do it now if I need info, like the name of an actor or to find out what films someone has been in or to check the parents content advisory. Unless I need to lookup some film facts I don't go there anymore.

reply

Sometimes I do for reasons which have been previously listed such as finding out who an obscure actor was in a film, trivia etc. In addition I still use Amazon because of its convenience. I don't think the IMDB message boards were there from the beginning either. Does someone by chance know the year they came into existence? Also the suggestions others have given to get the individual boards more active are good ones which I plan to act on. In addition I feel like if all of the individual actor boards were updated then that would help as well. People do not always like to be the first one to post and have their comment as the only one sitting there.

reply

I still go there to rate movies, and sometimes to look at an actor/actress's list of roles. But otherwise nope. I barely go there now, and when I do it's only for a minute or so. Without the boards, it's just not a site worth spending time on.

My guess is I visit IMDb about 97% less than I used to.
I used to almost always rate a movie or show after seeing it and check out the relevant message board. NO MORE. Thus far the best forum for "current" discussions I've found is REDITT.

oh, and BTW, on more than one occasion I have made purchases from EBAY rather than Amazon as a direct result of the termination of IMDb message boards.

I'm starting to lessen my anger a wee bit, but it's hard, real hard.
If they had said it was because it wasn't profitable to keep up and to much trouble to maintain, that would have been so much better than to blame FREE SPEECH.

reply

ok, 97% may be a little high, I still use IMDb quite a bit to verify this or that fact/question.

reply

The whole point of visiting IMDB (for me) was visiting the forums. Finding out others interpretations of a film. That's all I think about after I've seen a film or tv series.

But I'm here now, I'm happy. I do still go on there to look at the Reviews/Ratings, Trivia and Goofs but it depends on what I've watched.

reply

The same. I only visit it every once and a while on habit.

Same for me; my usage of IMDb was actually primarily the message boards, with info-lookup and rating activity only coming second to that. My main desire was to go to a message board expressly to see what people were saying about a movie or TV show, and to see if my thoughts are echoed, or to ask a question or opinion of those other people.

Then if I wanted to see information, I used the info pages because there were there and I was already on the site for the message boards anyway. Now I just use Wiki for info, since I'm not actually visiting IMDb to see message boards first.

As for ratings, I never was one to even really look at ratings let alone leave on, and that was usually only to keep a record of what I've watched.
