Ideas for promoting this board?

I think this is probably the best replacement for the IMDB message boards. We need everyone here right now to do some promotion. Let people know this place exists so we can generate activity.

If anyone has effective or creative ways that all of us can do our part to spread the word, please share!

I've been trying to get celebrities in film with high followers to retweet this place. I've also been spamming it in some live streams.

If you're on any other forums promote it there, even if only a few people read it it's worth it, word of mouth takes time but it's the best way. Tell everyone you know about it, mention it on other movie boards if you're on them. Youtube comments is a good place, tons of people read them.

I've let a few of my friends know about it, but I dunno if they'll join. I don't actually have social media, believe it or not.

Do a mass spam of your email addresses telling people it is the best alternative if they ever used IMDB boards before.

Put it in your signature anywhere you are able to.

I've been posting about MovieChat on Facebook mainly. Obviously to all my friends, but I've also been going on the IMDB Facebook page and making a couple posts a day.

I'm going to start posting on all Reddit's movie subreddits. There's just so many subreddits that it takes some time.

I agree it's the best alternative for the IMDB boards, but would caution people about being over-zealous about how they promote MovieChat. Spamming tends to backfire, even if well-intended.

I've emailed the one IMDB poster whose email I knew, and he's signed up as a result. Posted a thread in my favorite boards asking if any fellow IMDB posters are here (some are, yay!). I think threads like that make it easier for people to sign up and post instead of lurking.

IMO the best way we can help promote MovieChat is to post threads or posts on the various boards we're interested in. I often watch the Trending feed, and check out the new posts, contributing when I can.

If people have Twitter or whatever other appropriate social media, not spamming, but posting a link to here with a brief explanation of what it is, using #MovieChat.org, could be helpful to spread the word.

I really like it here, too! It's simplistic and "feels" right. I am going to post on FB.

reply

Good idea, a post (or two) on Facebook :). Aside from the many IMDB friends I met over the years, none of my friends are particularly interested in discussing film and TV, so that won't help. But I'd do it if they were.

Like you, I felt at home here almost right away.

The best thing to do is whoever runs the twitter account is make tweets fairly regular about 4 a day if possible (at different times of the day) but if not possible just do it once a day and at about the middle of the day in the USA to maximize how many retweets you will get & always include a picture in your post so you can tag "who is in this picture"... you tag 10 accounts that have large accounts that are to do with film who you know will retweet so you tweet gets more views & you also need these 10 accounts to be 10/10 every time because tweets that have already been retweeted a load of times always end up getting extra retweets.

Also what is handy is if you have a small amount of other accounts that are genuine accounts also retweet every tweet because even if they don't have thousands of followers it still boosts the amount of retweets which leads to more.

Use some popular film hashtags as well #GameOfThrones #TWD (The Walking Dead) #StarWars which again will get you more views.

Another trick is try and build the site two twitter accounts... one official & another account that is about films but not actually specifically for this site & what you do is tweet a promotion from both accounts occasionally and instead of spamming the shit out of each of your accounts followers with loads more tweets you just keep un-retweeting then re-retweeting which ever promotional post seems to be the most popular but in a sensible way and only the specific tweets you are doing it on until they have done all they can (judge that by how many new retweets and likes you are getting) & again at the best time of day ... this tactic won't work at the moment though because MC has no followers but still worth keeping in mind for the future & I have tested this and it works perfect.

all great ideas klownz!

I have already tried & tested all this stuff promoting a forum that had way more competition because so many other places already existed and worked fine long before & the stuff I used to promote was only on one subject not all films from every genre.

It has already been shown that the IMDB archive can be made into sites so now the real issue for users is which site is the most active & which site has the best features?

Now Jim has announced that he is making the archive here as full as the other archive sites I really can't see any site topping MC because the other sites are completely inactive.

Getting this site as active as IMDB was is a monster task though & I am talking all the sub-communities for single shows, films, genre forums etc.

"Use some popular film hashtags as well #GameOfThrones #TWD (The Walking Dead) #StarWars which again will get you more views."

But aren't those the boards that attract the more problematic posters? Aside from that suggestion, I think the rest are very good, sensible ones.

reply

Yes. That could create problems but everything on Twit needs to be very focused on the target... promotion in this case & most case.

But think very basic of just putting bums on seats... get people viewing, that is the goal & you can keep adapting.

Just get the people directly wanting what you post... you have the history of every film made to work with.

reply

I get what you're saying, but think it'd be a better course of action to post hashtags to newer and/or more popular films and shows that attract a less problematic viewership. There are a lots of them, and they could use the love :)

reply

Do it all. To promote you need to do it all... what is more popular than the mainstream shows i was talking about? Probably non but there is the problem.

#Flash #Arrow #OrangeIsTheNewBlack

Fuck loads of shows if you like them or not & #Logan #WonderWoman

For a site like this to work you need to lead the fucking pack... Go for it :)

Or just sit on the side & use all the other archives & sites.

reply

For me it's not a matter of if I like them or not, only the type of people they (generally) attract.

I don't know Flash or Arrow, so can't comment on them, but have seen Orange Is the New Black. Any of these three seem like good choices, or Logan, or whatever. A mix of popular and mainstream and indy would be good.

Seems to me this site is growing on its own, the more IMDB refugees who are finding it one way or another.

You're going about it all wrong. Post papers all around Hollywood. That is how you get the message across. Start with your local theaters and work outwards.

reply

Why just Hollywood?

reply

Lol are you going around Hollywood posting flyers for moviechat?

reply

Are we getting funds for this?
