this is the stupidest MI story ever

this movie is quite possibly even worse than MI 2, as corny as it was. the dialogue and story is so stupid and nonsensical in this. add to that the worst acting from the entire cast that i've ever seen. it's like they all phoned it in. all of tom's lines were terrible and he delivered it terribly. yes, the action sequences were good but they're way too long. how long did that car chase last? like 10 minutes straight? we've seen car chases like that in almost every movie now and like twice already in MI movies. same tight european alleys.

For sure. This would have been one of the movies I skipped when having a view-athon. And now it's unfortunately a two-parter and quite likely the finale of the franchise. Most unfortunate. Like somebody's favorite James Bond movie is also somebody's most hated James Bond movie. And if you make that into TWO movies, where does that even leave those fans? It's a silly thing to do. This isn't like Hunger Games or Harry Potter or something where you're all in on the saga no matter what. This should have been a proper fllm, and the part 2 should have been a loose sequel with a recurring character or two you didn't have to actually have seen this to follow. I think we're gonna see the BO for part 2 right in line with this one. They fumbled this badly. The story itself while a possible fear scenario for the future we're actually facing is just goofy and too strange to get invested in. And as you say, it's just a greatest hits rehash of what's come before. What does that even leave for tricks to pull out of the hat of the next one?

I read they plan to drop 'Dead Reckoning Part II' for the sequel. It was a huge misstep calling this 'Part I' like Hunger Games, Potter etc , potentially turned movie goers off bc it must only be half a movie when really it was like a complete film and the plot threads would just be continued in next one (similar to Rogue Nation/Fallout)

All they can do now for next one is complete the AI plot, bring back some previous MI actors/characters for fun cameos (Cavill in a flashback, Sean Harris, Paula Patton, Maggie Q, Fishburne), maybe tie it back to the original MI series somehow (a 60s flashback with OG Jim Phelps/Peter Graves with say Paris/Leonard Nimoy to reveal MI1s Phelps wasnt the same guy), and maybe get a big 'spy' name for a surprise cameo (Dalton, Brosnan, or Craig) call it 'MI Endgame' and hope for the best

reply

Ugh. Just reading you post annoyed me, nothing to do with you. "complete the AI plot". I already hate this story. And we're just getting a whole nother round of that. That's a mountain to climb.

reply

And you're not getting Part 2 until May of 2025 now thanks to Tom breaking his ankle in a stunt along with the strike.. By then, no one will care.. I feel like this backfired for 2 reasons: 1st, the Part 1 & 2 scenario where it should've just been 1 movie, 3 hours long and that's it!! And 2nd, Barbie killed this movie with Part 1 and to be fair, everything else as well and that's hard to recover from when the studio had their sights set on IMAX and lost to a Mattel Doll and Oppenheimer: Both of which didn't need IMAX, especially Barbie??

Tommy definitely pushed the envelope with this movie in every way possible, most especially how movies in Hollywood even get made. I think he found the breaking point for what is reasonable by flying right past it. That roof had to be found and he was the man to do it.

reply

The way AI is currently in the public consciousness they probably think they on to a winner doubling down on it, but will AI still be 'a thing' everyone obsessing over in 2025? we'll see..

reply

I'd have to agree.. I'm a bit bummed because I was sort of looking forward to it, but yeah let me just say it fell below expectations for me. I think the AI plot was a big mistake. Let's hope the next one makes up for it and these two aren't the last ones.

Fallout and the first MI are the only good movies in the series. Your criticisms can be applied to literally every other MI movie.

reply

MI3 was also quite good. I havent seen 1 and 3 again so I cant compare it directly but 3 is just as god as 1. fallout had the best action sequences and a story good that was enough. fallout had the best fight scene of a movie made in the west.

Overlong, convoluted plot, silly exposition scenes to explain the convoluted plot, the McGuffin of all McGuffins.

The car chases were very good, even if it was long it was great. Very inventive shots and interesting angles. Super clear as to where everything was, and spatial awareness was on point. We've never seen a "bad driving" car chase like this before so OP you're wrong. Hayley Atwell driving and crashing into everything was great as opposed to watching expert drivers navigate around the streets.

Great inventive action, humorous, sometimes funny. The cast was pretty good. Hayley Atwell is a good addition.

6 out of 10, enjoyed most of it, marked down because it's 2 hours 40 mins and the plot is about an AI, but isn't about an AI, it's about a key that could end the world and nobody thought to throw the key away.

reply

The key was to shut down the AI, not to cause the end of the world.

reply

According to one of Ving Rhames' many awkward exposition scenes where suddenly he became an expert on the AI they only just learned about. Something about the "source code".

In the finale, on top of the train, Ethan Hunt is on top of Gabriel with a knife at his throat. Verbatim:

"I know what the key unlocks Ethan, I'm the only one who knows"

Nobody knows what the key does. Ethan had it for most of the film or half of it. He knew it was bad and everybody was fighting over it. He could have tossed it down a drain and ended a potential World War 3. As far as I gather the one that holds the key controls the Ai or some crap. Countries were fighting and bidding to have it. The one who owns the key and uses it, controls the AI and wins the World.

Anyway, I liked it, but the points above still stand. Overlong, and convoluted plot.

1 stupid thing was the car chase in handcuffs.
she had a pick with her but didnt use it til after the deadly chase?

reply

Yes sir. Also it was just boring.

They knew she was stealing keys, yet he didn't make sure he was holding at all times. Nope. Let me just put that back in my pocket and hope she doesn't get this time.
