Possible without President Trump?

Picard is in my mind one of the most respected characters in the last 25 years . The character usually showed restraint, wisdom and fairness. Almost the complete opposite of the bellocose President.

So I am thinking would a reboot be likely if Trump was not elected?

reply

You are really obsessed, aren't you?

This show was created because people think they can make money from rehashing an old idea.

reply

Politics can effect what is green lit in Hollywood. To think otherwise would be obtuse.

'Wag the Dog' was created with a sly wink toward President Clinton. Micheal J Fox's character in 'Family Ties was created to embody Reagonomics. 'All the President's Men' and 'The Parrallax View' was created after the Watergate scandal.'Charlie Wilson's War' would not have been made if not for 9/11'.

My point is nothing happens in a vacuum. So why out of all the characters in the Star Trek universe did they pick Picard? Certainly he was not the most popular.

reply

The popularity of Patrick Stewart is the reason for the show. Who would you consider more popular than Picard? Possibly Kirk and Spock, but with a current film franchise those characters are locked in.

reply

Patrick Stewart is also 79 years old!!!

That might be unprecedented. Putting a 79 year old actor on the tube to star in a regular series. Even the Golden Girls were only in their low 60's in1985.

reply

Yes, Picard is a desperate attempt by CBS to breathe life into the Star trek franchise they are destroying.

reply

Well we can agree on your last point.

reply

That may have been our real point all along!

Let's play variations:

Possible without President Obama?
Picard is in my mind one of the most respected characters in the last 25 years . The character usually showed sincerity, clarity and constructiveness. Almost the complete opposite of the narcissistic President.

reply

You got me wrong, I am actually for some of President Trump's policies, it is his bluster and Twitter posts that I dislike.

The nickname for President Obama was 'The Vulcan'. A very astute observation, because he tended to come across as over analytical and aloof.

So out of all the 'Star Trek' races which one do you thing most closely represents President Trump? Answer honestly now.

I'm thinking the Ferengi. They liked to make deals, were profit/loss motivated.

reply

Neelix

reply

Of course it would. This has nothing to do with Trump and has more likely to do with ST: Discovery, The Orville and the recent Abrams reboot.

reply

Can't you idiots on the Left talk about ANYTHING without including Trump? He seriously lives rent-free in your heads, and it's becoming very tiresome! "Picard" is a tv show that has nothing to do whoever's president at the time, and yet all the Woke people can do is say "Oh, and we have to impeach Trump," in every single subject they talk about. You're worse than the Alphabet people jamming the homosexual agenda into everything!

reply

Alphabet people? Pro diversity? That is what Star Trek is all about!

Don't you think it is strange that a 79 year old man is picked to be the star on a series?

I am pretty sure it has never happened in Hollywood before. It is strange...

Star Trek was about meritocracy, which means: I take the best man (or woman) for the job, and that's it. How diverse or non-diverse is the result was completely irrelevant.

Sure...

IDIC which stands for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. It was a medallion that Spock wore in a few episodes. The idea came from the series creator Gene Roddenberry. So to say that diversity is not part of the ethos of the show is not to truely understand it.

Also, most of the IMBD examples you posted were in their early 60's or late 50's when the series started.

To put a 79 year old man in a new series is inherently problamatic for a company, because of the obvious risk of death. A good deal money is called upon to create the series. It is a bet. CEO's who make enough bad bets get fired. So why would the CEO make THIS bet? Is there a young Picard who is also in the series?

President Trump hasvacuumed up the news feeds for the past 3 years. People are sick of it, people are sick of his bluster, sick of his lack of civility. Trump still has diehard fans, but his act, has become tiresome. It is like watching WWE nonstop for 3 years.

Hollywood sees this need, and it is why they picked a 79 year old man to revive a character that many consider in temperment and character the polar opposite of President Trump.

Not really. They didn't call him for the long run. You just start shooting closeups and medium shots, then a 3d model for long shots in case something happens, and then you have a safety net. If there's more seasons, he can be replaced by a young actor using some kind of 'new body' excuse. It's scifi, after all.

Of course, the 'new Picard body' will be either a black man or a white woman. Indeed, Patrick Stewart's age is even an advantage: they get the publicity, and then they can replace him by a non-white-male actor using his age as a excuse. They can have it all. Win-win.

President Trump had vacuumed up the news feeds for the past 3 years. People are sick of it, people are sick of his bluster [...] Hollywood sees the this need

Meanwhile, in the real world, Trump's popularity is stable and even growing.

There's no real need.
-Whites Non-SJWs are either neutral or supportive regarding Trump.
-Non-whites in general have zero interest in old-whitey-male Picard.
-White-SJWs are the ones that could feel that need, but they're far from being numerous. They're extremely powerful, probably the most powerful social group in western world by far, but not particularly large.

2016 was a change year, people did not want another Clinton in the White house, they wanted something different.

There are 10s of millions of voters that stayed home because they were not enthused by Clinton or they assumed she would win.

They will be voting in 2020. I don't see Trump running the table again.

reply

Then how do you explain him having similar or even better popularity and approval than Obama?

reply

Fake news?

The only way to prove my theory is to ask the Hollywood exces who greenlighted Picard. Was Press Trump a factor in the creation of the series?

The problem is that you will not get an answer. Trump voters are Star Trek fans too.

Maybe 10 years down the road we will know.

reply

The problem is - you are more likely to see the senile Picard version - like professor X in Logan.
Then you'll realize that Trump had nothing to do with this crappy reboot.

reply

Everyone in my family is working and getting raises. Trump is creating a federation type utopia.

reply

You are taking the post the wrong way.I was just contrasting their leadership styles. Picard is a consensus person, making decisions based on expert opinions. Trump governs almost by pure instinct and loves chaos and keeping the other person off-guard.

Picard is reserved, Trump is bombastic.

You have to admit that the Picard character and President Trump have very different leadership styles and personality traits.

Hollywood often sees a need. While Trump has his diehard fans, a good percentage of America has had it's fill of his style.
