OK, when is enough, enough?

Is it so wrong to just want something original for once?

reply

I think that discerning consumers reached the EIE point long ago. The entertainment industry and the hoi poloi will probably never reach that point. It’s like when Mel Brooks’ movie, The Producers, was made into a successful Broadway musical—which was then made back into a movie! Perpetual motion is a myth, but perpetual canibalism is not.

reply

They did a whole season of curb about that

reply

Sadly, Disney is NOT going to stop this live action remake trend anytime soon.

reply

The cast list *groan*

reply

Yeah, I wasn't impressed by the cast list either.

reply

I agree. We see the same stories over and over again, with just a little bit change. I was a huge fan of hollywood movies. Because they made so many awesome movies in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Now they only care for making money with remakes and reboots.

reply

And pushing their liberal agenda.

reply

I mean, unpopular opinion I suppose, but I love these remakes. To be able to relive my childhood with much better visual effects than just an old 1950s cartoon makes me very happy.

reply

Maybe that's true if you have a poor memory... but I remember what the couple looked like in the animated version and remember what the evil aunt looked like - they were white. So having a revisionist version doesn't do anything for me. If they want to remake the animated movie into a live action movie including trying to create the same shots then don't monkey with the way characters looked. This was just a PC diversity crap fest and a good reason they never released it in theaters.

reply

YOURE SAD

reply

No, just honest. I have never met a single person that has thought all the diversity casting based on race or gender is a good thing and a lot of the people I know will refuse to go see a movie that uses diversity casting. If you notice the lower box office results indicate a hell of a lot of the American public feel the same way. How many tickets did Ghostbuster sell? Why is Lady and the Tramp straight to video and why was the 2015 Fantastic Four a bomb... Only a few liberal snowflake morons get hard ons for diversity casting, normal people just see it as stupid.

reply

Watch some original movies then. Lol. The fact that remakes exist does not mean original content does not.

I seriously don't get why people complain about this. Don't like remakes? Don't watch them. Simply. Easy. Done.

reply

While I wrote this a year ago I still stand by what I said. I actually don't hate remakes, there have been some really good ones out there. It's just that Disney movies are all adaptations of something else and then they remake those adaptations one or more times and then add in all the sequels. It's not just Disney that does it either. It's all a little trite.

It also makes me sad that we, as the audience, don't demand better.

So while I have the option not to watch them, if everyone else does they are never going to make anything new.

reply

So while I have the option not to watch them, if everyone else does they are never going to make anything new.
That would make sense if nothing new was being made. That's not the case. There's original content and there's remakes. Both options are there.

reply

About 55% of all Hollywood movies are adaptations. So while I agree that there is original content being made, there are fewer options and they are more difficult to come across. Just for example in 2018 we had;

Sequels such as Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Sherlock Gnomes, Johnny English Strikes Again, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Fifty Shades Freed, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Deadpool 2, The Equalizer 2, Super Troopers 2, Wreck-It Ralph 2, Creed 2, Paddington 2, The Incredibles 2, Sicario 2, Hotel Transylvania 3, The Purge 4, Mission Impossible 6.

Prequels such as The First Purge, The Nun, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (which is also a sequel)

Spin-offs such as Aquaman, X-Men New Mutants, Black Panther, Bumblebee, Ant-Man and the Wasp (also a sequel).
Remakes and reboots such as Halloween, Mary Poppins Returns, The Predator, Tomb Raider, Ocean’s 8 (despite its name, not a sequel).

Adaptations such as The Jungle Book, Vemon, Rampage, Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween, 12 Strong, Peter Rabbit, Every Day, The War with Grandpa, Red Sparrow, A Wrinkle in Time, Love Simon, Ready Player One, Where’d You Go Bernadette, The Darkest Minds, Crazy Rich Asians, Boy Erased, First Man, The Girls in the Spider’s Web, Mary Queen of Scots, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Little Women, The Bell Jar, Bel Canto and many more…

So I don't think that I'm completely out there wanting a little more originality.

reply

No, it's just idle hope. Disney+ might not last though.

I present to you: The hypocrisy of film fans about original movies.

What? Correct... this fellow (who I disagree with often and can find irritating) is right on the money about this topic https://youtu.be/jaL1QixXOfQ
No lies detected here!
And no, this isn’t just another YouTuber.

Just because you don’t like what’s out there... or more like you likely don’t make any real effort to give what’s out there a chance and thus falsely state that remakes, sequels, etc are all that’s made nowadays... doesn’t in fact mean original content is nonexistent or sorely lacking (far from it). Educate yourself. But here’s the thing... if people who aren’t you enjoy/welcome these live-action remakes, then so what? You find it irksome? Tough!

What I really find amusing about broken record posts like this (aside from the misinformation being spread), is the fact no one is FORCED to watch these feel-good remakes/reimagined movies that evidently many get a kick out of, however... you would think that’s actually the case based on what those who constantly complain about modern cinema/Disney claim. #okboomer

^And lol at burgar... I’ll remember that “bold” prediction 2-4 years from now when Disney+ is still here and bigger than ever. The ones failing, are the Disney detractors.

reply

Sure there are a lot of original movies made each year... but how many of them are marketed in a way that the potential movie goers even have a chance to hear about them? And how many theaters will actually even show the original movies. There times when I can look at the movies showing at the 20 screen theater near me and it will not be showing 20 different movies but maybe 8 or 10 different movies with some of the titles being shown on 2 or 3 screens sometimes on 4 screens. And often when I know about an original movie that I want to see it will never even show up in my local theater. It is a cop out to simply say the audience just doesn't care enough to go to the original movies when in fact the original movies are very often unavailable for people to see. One of the worst things to happen to cinema is the film being replace with digital as it makes it too easy for a theater chain and distributor to flood the screens with what they want to push on use like the latest and Marvel comic crap and in the process remove the ability for a theater to show the lesser marketed original movies. But your Youtube guy just ignores those facts and tries to push the blame on the movie goers.. It isn't the movie goers that control what movies the local theater screens, it isn't the movie goers that determine how many millions are spent advertising a movie.. those are the things that drive a movies success or even possible success and they are in the hands of a very small group of people.

I appreciate what you are saying and what the video is saying. I said in a comment above

It also makes me sad that we, as the audience, don't demand better.

I have also said that I don't hate all remakes and adaptations. There have been quite a few that I like very much. I agree that there is original cinema being made. There are many independent films that are original and fantastic. That doesn't change the fact that over 55% of hollywood movies are adaptations. When it comes to big budget blockbusters that I would actually want to spend money in a theatre to see, there is nothing original. So I guess that means that I agree with thomas998's comment as well.

This isn't anything new with Disney. Of all of the solely Disney movies out there very few of them are not adaptations of other works, so I'm not really complaining about modern Disney. I should also add that just #okboomer is incredibly dismissive, especially when I'm not a boomer, nor have I dismissed anyone's opinion on this thread. I'm just having a discussion about my feelings that I would like to see more original work.
