As frustrating as it is to watch this show....

It's still better than that Yawnfest House of the Dragon. I watch every episode as soon as it releases. Still haven't been able to motivate myself to watch this weeks episode of HotD.

I haven't seen House of the Dragon so I can't really compare the two shows. I thought the ending of GOT was unsatisfying so I don't need to see HOTD.

Does HOTD have a similar format to GOT? My big complaint about ROP is that they have turned this show into a bonanza of mystery boxes and easter eggs. As of episode 6 of the first season of ROP, viewers do not know the identity of Sauron and there are so many mysterious characters in the show. I think the show would have been better if they revealed Sauron's identity from the beginning instead of making the show a suspenseful mystery.

I agree with all of your points, but it is better than HotD. HotD is like game of thrones but more boring.

They both suffer from writers who apparently think good plotting is sitting around thinking: “Hey wouldn’t it be cool if this happened” nevermind whether there’s any back-story or plot or character development to support the cool thing.

""Does HOTD have a similar format to GOT?""

Not sure what you mean by "format" but HotD is quite a bit different than GoT. Different characters and different timeline but fewer storylines. For the most past, it's quite focused on two houses.

There are some similarities though, like, HotD had a jousting tournament scene like GoT, and it has the classic blond Targaryens and King's Landing is also in the show among other crucial landmarks.

The biggest similarity has to be the morally grey characters. Which is pretty much a staple in George Martin's books. So, not too surprising to see this in HotD.

So far I would say season 1 of HotD hasn't been as good as season 1 of GoT. But there are still 3 episodes left, it could have a strong finish. However, I wouldn't bet on it.

I was wondering if HOTD was a straightforward clash between families for the throne. GOT viewers figured out pretty quickly which characters were evil BUT a lot of the characters in ROP remain a mystery after six episodes.

The first season of ROP is sort of a mystery with easter eggs, cliffhangers, red herrings and mystery boxes. The biggest mystery is the identity of Sauron and the show leaves red herrings that seem to indicate that one character is Sauron or has a mysterious past.

Each episode ends with a suspenseful cliffhanger and there is no need for cliffhangers in the modern streaming era. One episode ended with the two dwarves looking inside a chest with something glowing inside it. Another episode has a group of elves in white appearing BUT there hasn't been an explanation of who they are. Another episode ended with an antagonist approaching the camera with his face blurred out.

The two ROP showrunners worked at Bad Robot under Abrams and Abrams was involved with the Lost television show. ROP reminds of the Lost show since there are many unforeseen twists and turns.

Ahh, I see what you mean. At the moment, there is no battle for the throne going on but it's leaning that way. The story is actually based on the Targaryen civil war and so, it will eventually lead to some type of glorious battle to determine who will sit on the throne.

Right now it's just a lot of court intrigue. It's a rather slow build up. In fact, so far there's only been one big battle scene and it was not a very interesting scene. But I do expect all hell to break loose pretty soon.

House of the Dragon Is frigging Awesome, you got no taste.

And no its completely different to GOT, it has its own identity.

reply

No.
Even though HotD has issues.
The plot gallops too fast and I, for one, would actually prefer them giving more time to character development. Because - unlike RoP - they have interesting characters played by talented actors. Paddy Considine alone blows everyone in the Amazon fanfic out of the water.
The directing is somewhat inconsistent but nothing like the ungodly mixture of genres in RoP.
The design and costumes are a hundred levels above what apparently a billion dollars can buy.

You take a generic 90s fantasy show, lose all tongue-in-cheek humor and add expensive CGI - that's how you get RoP.

This!!!

While I don't find HotD boring, I will have to agree, so far, RoP has been the better show. But I say that loosely, because I haven't been all that enthusiastic about either one. They're both solid entertainment but I would not tell any of my friends or family "you gotta see this".

Still, I do think both shows have been good for a few laughs with RoP edging out HotD in one area, and that's entertainment value. Sure, it's a slap in the face to Tolkien's work but the show is fun to watch and the visuals are damn good in RoP and the characters are definitely more fleshed out than they are in HotD.

We shall see how the final 3 or 4 episodes of season one turn out but so far, I give RoP an advantage and I was really pulling for HotD in the beginning.

There's no accounting for taste, is there? I think House of the Dragon is the vastly superior show. Much better written and acted, and the sets, costumes and CGI look superior on a much smaller budget. Rings of Power is amateur hour at best. The writing is sub-amateur.

reply

The dialogue and costumes alone in HOTD make Rings of Dogshit look like dogshit squared.

reply

I Disagree, the acting and writing in House of the Dragon is vastly superior to the crap in this show.

reply

HoD is great. Give it a shot. I recommend subtitles, cause keeping track of the names is nerve-racking.

reply

Princess Rhaenyra and Princess Rhaenys....fuck me, was George taking the piss?

reply

And there's Prince Aegon, and Prince Aemond. Confusing shit.

House of Dragon is not that bad. But I still like Rings of Power better. With HOD, you really have to lean on the post-episode recaps to make any sense of what’s going on. And even though both are fantasy, HOD feels more like a political drama set in a medieval time with an occasional dragon here and there. It feels more historical rather than mystical.
Rings of Power leans into its fantastical setting a lot more, and you explore its world and its magic more extensively. It also feels more set in an antiquity setting rather than the Middle Ages.
