Why did they make him gay?

According to his family he wasn't gay so why did they make this decision? To bait the Academy? Imagine if they turned a real life homosexual character straight, there'd be outrage.

reply

His family is in denial, he was certainly gay. Have you seen him?

reply

So if you're a musician and like art that means you're gay? There's no concrete evidence and his family are denying it. I say we turn a real life homosexual figure straight and see what the reaction is.

reply

Being a musician and liking art has nothing to do with it. Liking same sex partners does.
Also it is easy to see from his flamboyant style and personality (which they did not display in the movie), that he could be picked out as a nelly a mile away.
His parents were Jamaican and up until very recently Jamaican culture was notoriously homophobic, so it is not surprising his family would not want to acknowledge he was gay.

reply

Flamboyant equals gay?

reply

So basically there is no actual evidence that he was gay. Like I said, I hope they make a movie about a homosexual musician and turn him straight for the sake of it. The reaction would be hilarious.

Why can't I get people eating BBQ in every single tv show and movie? I demand a BBQ eating scene in ALL MEDIA. I'm going to call a random number right now and tell them that I like BBQ.

Exactly, and there's no evidence of him liking same sex partners. You're just spouting stereotypes as evidence which isn't evidence at all.

reply

There is no evidence of Liberace liking same sex partners either, yet…

reply

Jamaican culture is STILL by and large very homophobic.

Hollyweird, agenda driven revisionism

Don Shirley was gay. In real life, he was a lot more effeminate than he was portrayed. Ali refused to do some of his most flamboyant traits because he thought people would think he was making fun of Don being gay.

reply

I am guessing these refusing to believe it have never heard of him until this movie came out.....

It's hetero-conversion.

Hollywood does it... A LOT. Especially with historical figures who can't argue on their own behalf.

They did it with Elizabeth Marston in the Professor Marston film, turning her into a lesbian, even though she wasn't in real life, and her family stated as much.

They also did it to Mary Annig, who was straight in real life but they turned her into a lesbian in the film.

They also did it to Lizzie Borden, who was also turned into a lesbian in the film.

They also did it to Emily Dickenson, who they turned into a lesbian.

There are some more, but I'm not going to waste time naming them. But you're absolutely right, if they took a famous gay icon like Elton John, K.D. Lang, Melissa Etheridge, Ellen DeGeneres or Queen Latifah, and made them hetero in their biography, there would be endless uproar until the film was pulled from distribution and it would be completely neglected from any recognized award shows/ceremonies.
