Dark Fate is bombing at the box office

Maybe there is hope for sci fi after all.

"If you can’t get Cameron, then entrust the entire franchise to one visionary auteur, script and helming, and not just any one director, but someone who is truly going to break it and rebuild it, a la Ryan Coogler or James Gunn kind of way, and rise the Terminator series from its tormented ashes. Dark Fate played best in the West, South-West along with Canada but even these numbers were clearly disappointing."

my words... just that i would replace "ryan coogler or james gunn" with christopher nolan or denis villeneuve.

reply

Lol Christopher nolan

reply

he'd probably make an overly complex time travel story out of it... but certainly interesting (and more practical fx than dark fate's silly cgi overload)

or what about some decent horror directors? i think alexandre aja would make a good terminator director. his 'high tension' had some terminator vibes.

reply

And then after an overly complex time travel story it ends with love conquers all anyway. Sarah Connor then realize that it's not fate, it's love.

reply

not all nolan movies have a happy ending. haven't you seen 'memento'?

reply

Yes, I have seen Memento.

reply

Memento has a happy ending.

reply

not sure which memento you're talking about, as christopher nolan's hasn't. if you really believe that i'd advise you to watch the film again or see a doctor. seriously.

reply

I thought it was uplifting. He isn't going to get his memory or wife back, but we knew that from the start of the film. He gives himself a John G and or a purpose to continue living, and on the other end he tricks himself into believing he avenged his wife's death. It's the happiest ending he could plausibly get given his condition.

reply

oh dear look like it heading for similar opening to Genisys but unlike Gen dosnt seem to be doing too well overseas..so maybe DF could really struggle like a similar disappointing domestic of 90m total and maybe 200m overseas (TG made 350m of which over 100 from China)

obviously whats happened is audiences got burned by TGEN (not to mention T4), and it not looking all that appealing from trailers looking to be more of the same (Old T800, crazy CGI stunts) despite it being sold as a more genuine sequel to T2 (R rated, Hamilton/Cameron returning sort of).. and are giving it the Dark Phoenix treatment

reply

Well, to be fair... they gave it the Dark Phoenix treatment, they recieved the Dark Phoenix box office results lol.

Terminator has become a metaphor for itself, with filmmakers trying different things only to face the same outcome: Judgment Day is inevitable. Hollywood may yet figure out that audiences who aren’t die-hard sci-fi geeks have little interest in additional Terminator movies. Making a “future war” sequel with Christian Bale as John Connor didn’t do it. Making a time-twisting retcon, presumably modeled after Star Trek, didn’t do it. Bringing back the old gang for a passing-the-torch sequel like Star Wars: The Force Awakens didn’t do it. The pitches change, the hooks differ, but the result is always the same. Just because folks liked The Terminator in 1984 and lost their minds over Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991 does not mean they have any interest in additional Terminator movies. Just because something was once popular doesn’t mean audiences care for a new iteration.

reply

People reject Wokeness and hack directors not Terminator

reply

Yes, but mainstream media like Forbes won't criticise that.

reply

Once people call out it's PC feminist BS they will make the right movie for the franchise just like them now making ghost Busters 2020

cringe tweet alert (as if people are going to go to the movie for those reasons.. also 'never had a major franchise film with 3 female leads before'??... wtf?! Charlies Angels.. Oceans 8.. GB2016.. and those just the recent ones)

Dark Fate - John Connor's Fate (Opening)

reply

29m opening - about 10m less than studio predicted (for recent comparison TG made 27m opening/89m total, Alien Cov 36m opening/74m total, Blade Runner 2 was 32m opening/92m total, The Predator 24m opening/51m total. Alita 28m/85m). also opening with 28m in China (what TG made on its opening day!) so looking to a final 50-60m China (TG did 113m in china)
