The Hood Maker

Just finished 1st episode. The ending was a bit disappointing, but overall it was very good. The Black Mirror comparisons will probably prevent it from being held in a similar regard, but the start is promising and it's well worth the watch if you're able.

This series was hyped up by Aussie media as being really, really good, must-watch TV, but after watching the first episode I don't think it was that good. I hope the next episode is better.

I thought it was quite interesting. Reminded me of Minority Report with the Teeps similar to the Precogs.

Having not read any of his books and having only seen film adaptations of his work, I can tell he heavily incorporates dreams, and that looks to be the running theme of this miniseries.

Well I'm very disappointed after two episodes, all that mega hyping up .... for this?!

Don't give up after the next couple episodes, they are not that great at all (the premise is good, but execution not so much), but that all changes in episode 5, 6 and 7 all of which are worth your time. The last episode watched, Kill All Others, while quite obviously trying to draw parallels to American political climate today, should really be just watched as some great sci-fi writing about mob mentality and the real dangers of technology and apathy that it may bring (or has it already). How many times do I go on to social media only to see one more so called self professed social warrior calling to "kill all others" who do not think like he/she, it is very disturbing. You think unborn babies are human? You want to call abortion a killing? I'll KILL YOU!

It's definitely on par with Black Mirror.

I enjoyed The Hood Maker until the very end. Sucked.

Aye. Like many of these episodes, it was pretty cool all the way up to the end. They really screw the pooch with their endings. At the end of Father Thing I was somewhat satisfied and then they swell the dramatic music and zoom in on the hashtag Resist ... oh fuck off!

The only episode I thought was quality start to finish was the Vacation one with Terrence and Paquin.

reply

Exactly the same here. Funny thing is, I had read the story recently, and the ending was great. Why the hell did they have to adapt a great ending into that?

reply

I didn't like, and don't like, when a show/movie misleads he audience with a false happening. In this case we have Ross talking to his superior. As we are watching it happen his superior is being derogatory towards Honor, but when we see how it really happened he is the one who was being derogatory. Lazy, misleading story telling.

But, i was trying to figure out if Ross, for some reason was altering his memory of the conversion. I couldn't think of any good reason why he would.

The Hood Maker should've never been used as the first episode since it's the weakest of the series. The order should've been this.
1. Human Is
2. Autofac
3. Real Life
4. The Father Thing
5. Crazy Diamond
6. Kill All Others
7. Safe and Sound
8. The Commuter
9. Impossible Planet
10. The Hood Maker

Really, I have trouble deciding which was the weakest. In almost every case, perfectly sound stories were re-written almost beyond recognition and the result reminded me of the bland Outer Limits re-make, but with better effects and a nicer look.
