Lab security protocols

Their lab security was kind of strange.

I would have expected them to be totally robotic in a closed box, not a glove box. This means it can have a solid mechanical barrier.

The box should be capable of an emergency sequence where it can get heated to 3000 degrees and then vented directly to open space. The lab itself should have an emergency purge function that vents it to outer space. Then finally, explosive bolts to jettison the entire lab and thrusters to get it into the highest possible orbit.

I don't think any of their thrusting systems had the delta-v to get them past lunar orbit, that part in the film seemed dubious but didn't ruin it.

Yeah. Didn't the Alien franchise exist in this world?

While all this seems prudent, does the actual ISS actually have any of these features? If not, then Hollywood actually imitates life for once?

reply

I couldn't agree more w/you. I just saw this movie and hated it. Everyone was stupid.

reply

Yeah ... I totally agree ... from now on writers and directors need to know that science fiction is ruined by stupid people. Might was well regress to 3 Stooges On The Moon or something, it is offensive and a waste of time to try to tell such stupid stories.

reply

I agree. Their "firewall" protocols were so lame that it made the movie hard to take seriously almost right from the beginning.

reply

Even there use of the term firewall seemed lame to me. :/

reply

It also made no sense they wouldn't have told everyone about the firewalls, all the firewalls. A mission like that they would have been super selective with who they picked, and made sure everyone agreed to everything beforehand.

Also as the OP said, they never should have been using a gloved capsule, it should have been robotic to lessen the risk of contamination should the gloves get damaged.

reply

It was not correct according to procedure

The Andromeda Strain came out in 1971. How can people still be so gullible? Glove boxes? Really? People ask if the ISS is even equipped to handle quarantine. Maybe not right now, but they were expecting a special delivery from Mars. In this movie's universe, the ISS would have been fully equipped to handle anything.

reply

That whole thing made the movie ridiculous. Movies have gotten away with this trick way too often, the Alien series seems to do it constantly. Why do a science fiction movie if you are going to say fuck the science and logic from the get go? I really hated this movie, it was terrible.

In reality, there is little likelihood of there being a creature like this in space. But, if there was, the guy would be lost, period. BUT, that space should be isolated from the rest of the ship, and the crew should be trained, and they would be trained, to detach from someone and not jump into an alien infected space to rescue someone infected and bring them back into the clean human space. Very stupid movie.
