Harry Styles is surprisingly a very good actor

Do you agree?

I never heard of him before he turned up in this movie.

Then again, I don't keep up on whatever pop-douche "star" is currently a new star in the worthless world of hit music.

Ok, maestro, whatever. Hit radio is aimed at younger kids, so there is nothing wrong with the music they listen to. If you don't like it, don't listen. Hit that little thing called the tuning knob. But please, indulge us adults as to what the correct music is that we should be listening to.

There is less "good" music being made in this world at this moment than at any previous time I can remember in my meager years of existence. Yes, there's still SOME good music to be found, but it seems to marginalized and is definitely not supported by what passes as popular opinion in the mass media anymore. I'm not a wilderness guide, so if you haven't found enough of it...keep looking. I'm not gonna fall into the trap of listing what I consider as worthwhile (i.e., "good") music just so you can lambast my picks to make yourself look superior.

The only thing I can say with certainty is: Pop music sucks balls. It always has, and it always will. Yeah, at some points in history it's been better than others, but any style of music that is mostly supported by the buying-dollars of teenage girls is always going to suck balls.

You can say the same thing about music and movies aimed at young guys age 13-18, I guess. And I'm tired of dudes claiming anything supported by young girls (or grown women, for that matter) automatically sucks. Just because YOU don't like it dosen't mean it sucks. Also, how would you know whether music is so-called "worthless" if you don't even listen to it anymore? That makes absolutely no damn sense. That's just your arrogance and sexism talking.

Sandoz:
There is still good music being made, it just depends on what you want to listen to. Good music hasn't stopped being made simply because you don't listen the radio anymore. And it dosen't make you superior because you claim not to listen to anything now. And Styles was with a very successful boy band named One Direction (who could all actually sing, and play their own instruments,btw--so they were a real band) and is a talented singer/musician in his own right---now doing his own music, since the group recently broke up. He's not why I wanted to see DUNKIRK film though----I like war films, and since it was a British film by Christopher Nolan, I knew it was going to be good, and I wasn't disappointed. The movie actually made you feel like you were going through literally everything the soldiers were going through in a way I haven't felt since I saw another war film a few years ago called UNBROKEN. DUNKIRK was damn good, it's not your typical war film, and it's definitely worth seeing. Also, even though Styles is in the film, it's not a star vehicle for him at all---he's not even the main character, he's just one of the many characters in it, even though he does have a small but significant role. Plus it's a big box office hit, which is great---it's definitely not your typical summer blockbuster flick, I'll say that.

I've been listening to music since I was a young kid in the late 60s so I have a bit of experience and I can tell you that pop music today is just as bad or just as good as it was in any era. I've been listening to indie/college/alternative/left of the dial, whatever you want to call it since the early 80s. I know where to find good music and its not limited to what I like. There is also good music in other formats, even in some places you would never think of like 1960s French Chanteuse or 1980s German Neue Deutsche Welle. I can also appreciate some good pop songs over the years, including new ones. Its better to be open to listening to a variety than to dismiss at hand any particular format because of who listens to it. Remember, a lot of teen girls bought a lot of Sinatra, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, new wave, and punk music. There's a lot of good music today and like you said you have to know where to find it. Some of its even very popular.

I'm not at all fond of current music. However, you're opinion is identical to every adult's opinion about teenagers and young people for the last 5000 years. The ancient Greeks lamented about the poor discipline, drive, and taste in art of the young. So, I doubt very much that less "good" music is being made in the world at this moment than at any previous time.

Lol

Actually very surprised he did that well in the one scene

Doesn't the "DIRECTOR" have anything to do with getting the required performance out of an actor? ;)

reply

That depends on the director and the actor in question. Some directors are very good at getting top performances out of actors (William Wyler is a notable example), whereas others essentially leave them to their own devices (e.g., Hitchcock). Of course, if there is nothing in the actor to get out (e.g., Keanu Reeves), no director can make a difference, and any director would be wise to simply cast someone else.

reply

I would agree. My judgement was clouded as I didn't know he was in the movie and didn't notice any 'bad acting'. Given that, I would say he did a decent job.

reply

I thought he was ok but i can see the potential

reply

A teen pop star acting pretty well in a serious movie? You must be kidding! (Donnie Wahlberg changed the game lol). Yes, his performance is convincing throughout the film.

It’s not a role he completely owned, but kudos to him and of course Nolan. He was well-casted.

reply

He wasn't dreadful but his line "we only survived" at the railway station was so wooden I could smell oak.

reply

[deleted]

Was that wooden in the Tom Cruise school or petrified in the Keanu Reeves school?

reply

Not bad. I didn't recognize him at first, then when I did, I said to myself, "He is actually decent looking with a haircut.".
