Whoever thought up the re-release idea is a big hero at Disney/Marvel right now.

It's such a big moment. Very, very happy for the MCU! And this crowning as the #1 all time movie wasn't due to Endgame alone. It was due to 11 years of tireless world building, good storytelling and fine casting. Great job Kevin Feige and to all the men/women who helped make this happen.

And it happened in just 12 weeks. It took Avatar 32 weeks to get where it got, even with all the built-in advantages it had over Endgame.

With inflation adjustment, the king of all time is still Gone With The Wind (1939).

Here we go. (Yawn)

Well, sure, and it took nearly 50 YEARS for that film to reach its total box office numbers. Lemme repeat that... 50 YEARS! On top of that, it had a four year initial theatrical release! Yup. (Today’s biggest blockbusters are lucky to last three months in theaters.) What’s more, all the top adjusted for inflation box office kings (which Endgame currently occupies the 5th spot) have had multiple rereleases throughout the decades. Endgame? It only took less than 4 MONTHS for that film to accomplish what it has. Not even a year! The majority of the other “true” top 10 kings of the box office, on the other hand, have been out for decades (excluding the decade-old Avatar) and were released on the big screen several times.

It’s funny how these factors are rarely brought up by the inflation crowd when they try to dismiss the success of today’s big hits while fawning over Gone with the Wind. Oh, sure, GWTW was big from day one. However, in its original run (four years, lol) it by no means came close to earning what it ultimately did. True story.

Y’all want to play the adjusted 4 inflation game? I can do this all day! :D Higher ticket prices, growing population... yeah, yeah. I’ve heard all those excuses enough times already. But if that’s how you want to play it, then I can list a number of reasons why it’s no less impressive for today’s films to earn money than those from the past. For one thing, back in the old days there wasn’t competition like there is in today’s world of entertainment. After all, going to the movies was a much bigger deal back when streaming didn’t exist; the Marvel films though, they are event films for a reason.

And again, not only do today’s movies leave theaters rather quickly compared to those from the past (doesn’t matter if they’re successful or not), but there are far more blockbusters being released than ever before. The landscape has completely changed over the last 10 years. Today if a movie wants to become a hit in an age where there’s a lot of competition in - and out of - the movie theaters, then it truly needs to win over audiences.

Bearing all this in mind, if a picture that had an enormous head start over Endgame should be called the true king even though it didn’t gross 3 billion when it originally came out (and that’s the exact impression the inflation crowd wants to give to people), then it’ll only be fair if the latter is given as many releases as GWTW got for the next 4-5 decades. Ah-ha!!:>

That’s the way it is. But man, in spite of the competition it faced all this summer, Endgame still managed to climb to the very top the same damn year it came out! ;) Old timers and cinephiles will keep coming up with their familiar excuses (good for y’all, I guess), and yet Endgame will still - rightfully - be seen as the real box office king by most people. And why? ‘Cause it 100% earned that title. Nuff said!
