What Was the Deal With the Hulk?

I’m talking about when Banner tried to change into the Hulk, but Hulk of his own will wouldn’t appear.

That’s news to me, I didn’t think it worked like that. Thought Banner becoming the Hulk was more of a involuntary thing but I guess I was wrong about that.

But still again, why wouldn’t the big guy show? Was it because he got his ass handed to him by Thanos? Was it because he genuinely got hurt & felt fear for the first time? Embarrassment?

A movie with almost every Avenger & superhero & we only get Hulk for a few minutes in the beginning. Nice. That was a rip.

So what do you guys think?

The suggestion was that the Hulk was afraid after being humiliated by Thanos. He as shown to have progressed to the mental level of a petulant, sulky child in Ragnarok, and it follows that it's going to take something of a pep talk from Banner to get him to dust himself off and try again. I'm confident he'll show up in the next film.

Precisely this. The last time Hulk came close to being beaten, was in the gladiator fight against Thor. But compare that to his encounter with Thanos, and it’s evident Hulk had never been defeated, let alone DOMINATED and humiliated in such a painful way. He came raging & smashing as he always does best, rightfully believing to be the strongest there is, but unfortunately for him he came to find out that Thanos could more than put up a fight against him. As a result, the big guy became shocked and horrified by what happened (it WAS shocking to see him get obliterated like that). Not to mention Hulk is like a petulant child who is beginning to develop feelings, thus fearing the seemingly untouchable (and scary) Thanos makes perfect sense.

And sure, not getting to see the Hulk come out again was a letdown. That said, I appreciated the way they handled this ordeal and it makes for some interesting character development. I mean for the first time ever, Banner INSISTED the Hulk to come out. After all these years of trying to keep the monster away (and spending literally two years trapped inside him), Bruce now needs the Hulk more than ever. He’ll eventually come around.

Btw, as for changing into the Hulk formerly being an involuntary thing... well, that’s what I used to believe as well. But when Banner joined The Avengers at the battle of New York back in the first movie, he obviously became the Hulk by choice. “I’m always angry.”

After two years on Sakaar, I'd guess Hulk could and did develop his own personality and his own form of control.

He let Banner crash into the Rainbow Bridge as a form of petty revenge, and to show Banner (and us) that Hulk can now choose whether to manifest or not

Going forward, I'll wager Banner and Hulk have to mutually agree to change, in either direction

Of course, now that we know Ruffalo actually DID tip too much last year (and Don Cheadle really was alarmed, not just acting), it's likely Hulk/Banner's days in the MCU are numbered

Watch the video - Ruffalo tells the interviewer that “everyone dies” in this film, over a year ago. It’s not literally true, but it’s close enough that Cheadle reacts with (what we now can guess was) genuine horror.

Add to that the fact that Universal still owns the rights to a Hulk solo movie and Ruffalo’s screw-up with streaming Ragnarok, and I wouldn’t be surprised is Feige & co. decide it’s time for Hulk to say bye-bye forever

Just came across more from "motormouth Mark" Ruffalo - he may have been authorized to tip this but apparently he was specifically asked what he'd like to see in Hulk-centered movies, and Feige agreed to do most of it in Avengers 3 & 4.

So it's even more likely, to me, that Banner & Hulk don't survive Avengers 4. By Ruffalo's own admission, he'll have done all he's destined to do

Why don't people get the Hulk thing? It's so obvious that his pride is hurt and he has performance anxiety.

My issue with HULK is that he was beaten to easy by Thanos. I get the scene and the dynamics with Banner.... but HULK, the “real” HULK, would never get his arse handed to him this easily.

They could at least have shown Hulk go toe to toe with him, and then him resorting to using the power gem to give him the power to manhandle him like he did, but nooo... Other than that, and a few other "iffies", it was a really good movie, imo. ;)
